BC Green Party
Your Vision for Arts + Culture
Will you advocate for an increased investment to the BC Arts Council and to maintain or increase the current funding level for arts, culture and heritage in your community?
Will you take an active role on behalf of your community to lobby senior levels of government to increase levels of investment to the BC Arts Council?
If you are in favour of increased investment in arts, culture, and heritage for our province and committed to lobbying senior levels of government for increases to the BC Arts Council, would you require additional advocacy support from the BC Alliance for Arts + Culture? If so, how can we help?
Yes. I would appreciate more info from the professionals working in this field to help make the case. I think arts and culture play a very important role in our culture, in terms of helping us think and express ourselves, helping us heal and work through important issues in our lives and society, helping illuminate and provide meaning, and helping create jobs and innovation. Arts and culture are one of the biggest creators of meaningful economic activity in our province and this is very under-recognized. We have long known we need to diversify our economy and foster talent development and innovation. Support for the arts and culture is one of the best ways to support building an innovative and healthy economy.
In your view, how can our provincial government maintain or grow the cultural sector across British Columbia?
Funding support. Greater official recognition of the importance arts and culture play in our economy and in innovation.
Cultural + Creative Spaces
Will you work to ensure access to affordable, sustainable cultural and creative spaces for artists and arts organizations in British Columbia? If so, how?
Yes. I should note I am not an artist, so would have much to learn from the community about the way it sees itself and the types of spaces it wants and needs. That said, I recognize arts and culture as major contributors to our economy and to innovation. We will review the existing tax regime and programs to ensure both are supporting transition to a diverse emerging economy, in which arts and culture play a key role. Tax incentives may be in need of reevaluation. Programs may support sunset industries and could shift in a more sustainable - including arts and culture - direction. I will work with the arts and culture community to facilitate finding the types of spaces needed for arts and culture to flourish in BC and Delta North.
How will you improve cultural tourism in your community? How do you propose to attract and retain artists and cultural workers in your community?
I will work with arts and culture, tourism and other stakeholders in Delta North to identify the best ways to attract and retain cultural workers in North Delta.
What do you feel to be the single most important issue currently relating to arts, culture and heritage in British Columbia, and what action will you take to address it?
Reconciliation with indigenous peoples. There is much for the public to learn and the arts are such a great medium in which to convene that conversation. I am working on this everyday and will work to support carrying out these conversations throughout my riding and BC.
How do you personally engage in the creative and cultural life of your community, and more broadly, the province? (e.g. committees, attending arts and culture events, etc.)
I attend plays, visit galleries and shows, listen to panel discussions and am generally very active in my community.

Attending the cultural events at the Arctic Winter Games in 2008 when I moved to Yellowknife really helped change my life and helped me learn more about indigenous cultures in this country and around the world, and helped transform me into more of an advocate/ally for indigenous peoples. It was, frankly, eye opening and an immensely positive and transforming experience.
