Running for

City/Town Council

Party or Slate (if applicable)

Do you know how much your local government invests in the arts? Would you commit to advocating for an increase in that cultural investment for arts, culture, and heritage in your community, within the capacity of your elected body?

The Oliver Community Arts Council receives approximately $5000 per year from the Town of Oliver. Venables Theatre receives an operating grant through a joint agreement between the Town of Oliver, the RDOS and School District 53. This August, Venables Theatre received $107,500. The town also funds our museum and archives. I would advocate for increased funding for arts and culture.

If elected, will you take an active role on behalf of your local government in championing the growth of arts, culture and heritage in your community? Why?

Advocating for arts and culture are part of my platform. Oliver has a dynamic arts community and I believe it can be better utilized to “paint” the town and say that Oliver is open for business. I am a member of our arts community and participate and an artist and patron. Professionally I am the Marketing and Promotions Coordinator for Venables Theatre, our local performing arts theatre. I am also a member of SOAP Theatre as well as past secretary, and perform with them every year or two.

Students with an education rich in the arts have better grade point averages and are three times more likely to get a degree. Will you commit to making the arts a critical component of every child’s education? If so, how?

I would commit to supporting arts in education by continuing to encourage my children to participate in the arts.

Cultural Growth

How will your local government maintain or grow its investment in cultural programs in your community?

Arts and culture will help revitalize our downtown core. With more businesses comes a larger tax base which in turn can be invested back into the arts.

Cultural Spaces

Will you work to ensure access to affordable, sustainable cultural spaces for artists and arts organizations? If so, how?

I will communicate with our local arts council as to what their needs are and help give them a voice as a member of council.

Cultural Tourism

How do you propose to improve cultural tourism in your community?

By increasing our artistic presence on main street, which is also Highway 97. A strong arts and culture presence will attract those passing by to stop and look around, shop in stores and support local businesses.

How do you propose to attract or retain artists and cultural workers in your community?

The Venables Theatre is a jewel in our Town. Continuing to fund the Theatre as well as our arts council, and museum and archives will ensure our artistic presence is maintained.

Key Issues

What do you feel is the single most important issue relating to arts, culture, and heritage in your community, and what action will you take to address it?

Funding is always a challenge for the arts as it's easy to prioritize other matters. I would ensure our artistic community always has a voice on council.

How do you personally engage in the cultural life of the community? (e.g. involvement on committees, attending arts and culture events, etc.)

I am a member of SOAP Theatre and past society president. I continue to act and with SOAP and also sing in a local jam night. Professionally, i am the marketing and promotions coordinator at Venables Theatre and attend many events/ performances. I attend art shows and my children actively participate in the arts community.
