School District #63: Saanich
Party or Slate (if applicable)
Do you know how much your local government invests in the arts? Would you commit to advocating for an increase in that cultural investment for arts, culture, and heritage in your community, within the capacity of your elected body?
Yes, as Municipal Councillor in Central Saanich for the past 5 1/2 yrs, I advocated for the support and funding of various arts, culture and heritage initiatives at the local and regional level. As School Trustee, I would continue to be a strong advocate for arts/culture/heritage in our schools.
If elected, will you take an active role on behalf of your local government in championing the growth of arts, culture and heritage in your community? Why?
Yes, as Trustee I would encourage our schools to explore opportunities for students to perform / display their talents at various public locations - ie. at the municipal hall, public council meetings and community events
Students with an education rich in the arts have better grade point averages and are three times more likely to get a degree. Will you commit to making the arts a critical component of every child’s education? If so, how?
Yes. I will consult with student, parent, teacher and community stakeholders to listen to their ideas on what improvements are needed and then advocate for same as a member of the Board of Education for Saanich SD#63.
How will your local government maintain or grow its investment in cultural programs in your community?
I would encourage students/parents/teachers/the school district to seek out local and regional opportunities to showcase the talents of students at council meetings, public events and community locations, and would lend my voice as an advocate for enhancing partnerships and increasing support and funding within public education and all levels of government.
Will you work to ensure access to affordable, sustainable cultural spaces for artists and arts organizations? If so, how?
I would consult with the stakeholders to understand the needs and be an advocate for seeking opportunities for funding and access to community shared spaces.
How do you propose to improve cultural tourism in your community?
Let's make a stronger connection between local food, economic development and the celebration/enhancement of the arts/culture/heritage activities taking place within the south island region. As municipal councilor I was a strong advocate for local food, farms, the protection of farmland and would love to explore ideas for promoting agritourism in our community.
How do you propose to attract or retain artists and cultural workers in your community?
In addition to the above questions, I believe advocating for solutions to address the high cost of living/housing are essential.
What do you feel is the single most important issue relating to arts, culture, and heritage in your community, and what action will you take to address it?
Increasing public awareness, engagement and support for increased funding for arts/culture/heritage programs and expanding partnership opportunities.
How do you personally engage in the cultural life of the community? (e.g. involvement on committees, attending arts and culture events, etc.)
As a 40+ yr resident on the Peninsula, I enjoyed art, drama, literature courses and school clubs as a student in SD63; my career experience has involved work related to arts and tourism (Focus and Tourism Victoria magazines) and as a parent, volunteer, member of the community and local government, I have attended/supported a variety of local and regional arts and culture events, festivals and school programs. In my spare time, I love to 'dabble' in fabric arts and garden art!
