City/Town Council

Party or Slate (if applicable)

Do you know how much your local government invests in the arts? Would you commit to advocating for an increase in that cultural investment for arts, culture, and heritage in your community, within the capacity of your elected body?

The Town of Sidney is an enthusiastic supporter of the Arts, as a member of the CRD Arts Development Service, partner in the Mary Winspear Community Cultural Centre, and supporter of numerous local organizations and sponsor of events such as those put on by ArtSea Community Arts Council, SPAC, and the Sidney Museum. I am a supporter of the Arts, as a former Executive Director of the Mary Winspear Community Cultural Centre, and would look to further support the Arts on Council.

If elected, will you take an active role on behalf of your local government in championing the growth of arts, culture and heritage in your community? Why?

Yes - there are Council liaison opportunities with groups operating in arts, culture and heritage, and my familiarity with the sector and appreciation for the Arts would make me a strong candidates to make a contribution.

Students with an education rich in the arts have better grade point averages and are three times more likely to get a degree. Will you commit to making the arts a critical component of every child’s education? If so, how?

Yes. Municipal influence in education may be limited, but I would support community partners like the Sidney Museum and Mary Winspear Community Cultural Centre having open free access to school groups and encourage after school programs to provide Children with further exposure to the Arts.

Cultural Growth

How will your local government maintain or grow its investment in cultural programs in your community?

The Town of Sidney has commitments to the Mary Winspear Community Cultural Centre and the Memorial Park Society on funding models, and I would vote in favour of continuing to support Arts initiatives in the community.

Cultural Spaces

Will you work to ensure access to affordable, sustainable cultural spaces for artists and arts organizations? If so, how?

Yes. Grants in aid for Societies in the Arts, and sponsorship of events will contribute to ensuring affordability for artists and organizations.

Cultural Tourism

How do you propose to improve cultural tourism in your community?

Encourage the Business Improvement Area to include Arts and Cultural events in destination marketing.

How do you propose to attract or retain artists and cultural workers in your community?

By making grants in aid available to Arts, Cultural and Heritage organizations, and to sponsor key events taking place in Sidney.

Key Issues

What do you feel is the single most important issue relating to arts, culture, and heritage in your community, and what action will you take to address it?

Ensuring accessibility to the Arts, by promoting events and venues that cater to the Arts, and by sponsoring events so that pricing to participate or attend does not present a barrier.

How do you personally engage in the cultural life of the community? (e.g. involvement on committees, attending arts and culture events, etc.)

As a patron of the Arts I particularly enjoy live theatre, live concerts, and museum visits.
