Do you know how much your local government invests in the arts? Would you commit to advocating for an increase in that cultural investment for arts, culture, and heritage in your community, within the capacity of your elected body?

I will work within the capacity of Warfield to partner with other organizations to increase the cultural investment in the arts, culture and heritage of our community.

If elected, will you take an active role on behalf of your local government in championing the growth of arts, culture and heritage in your community? Why?

I believe that arts, culture and heritage are important to us all. We can reach and communicate with one another in a different way, one that reminds us all what it is to be human.

Students with an education rich in the arts have better grade point averages and are three times more likely to get a degree. Will you commit to making the arts a critical component of every child’s education? If so, how?

Within our community is an elementary school and a pre-school. Art is always a part of the curriculum, but if we are able to partner with other organizations we can increase the exposure for all of our children and enhance the quality of life of all of our citizens.

Cultural Growth

How will your local government maintain or grow its investment in cultural programs in your community?

Warfield has several wonderful community facilities and public spaces that are perfect for investing in cultural conversations. This may be as simple as an art or culture exhibit which can spark conversations, or signs added to increase an understanding of our history and heritage.

Cultural Spaces

Will you work to ensure access to affordable, sustainable cultural spaces for artists and arts organizations? If so, how?

Warfield community hall is a beautiful space and is always available at reasonable cost. I would support a sliding scale for artists, art organizations and cultural events as needed.

Cultural Tourism

How do you propose to improve cultural tourism in your community?

Most of the tourism in Warfield is related to the natural resources and nearby access to recreation opportunities. Perhaps we can explore a historical nature walk, or create a rotating art, music or cultural night within our community. These are questions that need to be taken in the regional context as well. Warfield is sandwiched between Trail and Rossland, both of which have vibrant cultural, musical and artistic communities which our community engages with regularly.

How do you propose to attract or retain artists and cultural workers in your community?

Our community is referred to as 'the jewel of the Kootenays', and this beautiful natural setting is a part of the allure for anyone seeking a home here. By highlighting our artists, our heritage and our beauty we can make it more appealing for us all. Working on collaboration with the other local municipalities will continue ensuring that our community members have access to the facilities offered nearby.

Key Issues

What do you feel is the single most important issue relating to arts, culture, and heritage in your community, and what action will you take to address it?

Our community would benefit from an increase in arts, culture and heritage related events, exhibits or conversations. Engaging the citizens to see what they are interested in is a good first step.

How do you personally engage in the cultural life of the community? (e.g. involvement on committees, attending arts and culture events, etc.)

I attend local art galleries, shows, music events and cultural events in Warfield and the surrounding communities.
