Do you know how much your local government invests in the arts? Would you commit to advocating for an increase in that cultural investment for arts, culture, and heritage in your community, within the capacity of your elected body?
New Westminster has increased its funding for the arts over the past number of years. The development of the Anvil Centre provides a wonderful opportunity to become the hub for arts and culture in our community. Moving forward we need to find ways to better supports our local artist and make sure they have access to our facilities.
If elected, will you take an active role on behalf of your local government in championing the growth of arts, culture and heritage in your community? Why?
I have been a strong advocate for arts, culture and heritage as my time as Mayor of New Westminster and I intent on continuing my strong support.
Students with an education rich in the arts have better grade point averages and are three times more likely to get a degree. Will you commit to making the arts a critical component of every child’s education? If so, how?
I would love to work with our local school board to advance this discussion in our education system.
How will your local government maintain or grow its investment in cultural programs in your community?
Arts and Culture activities cannot thrive in a community unless they have the support of their local government. I see the tremendous value the arts community contributes to our city and I want to see more opportunities for the local arts community to play a strong role in the cities arts functions.
Will you work to ensure access to affordable, sustainable cultural spaces for artists and arts organizations? If so, how?
The Anvil Centre in New Westminster is an amazing cultural centre in our community. Unfortunately we have found that many local arts groups have not been able to access this facility because of cost issues. We need to ensure that our arts community can access and thrive in the Anvil Centre.
How do you propose to improve cultural tourism in your community?
We need to ensure our cultural venues and city is open to hosting cultural events. This require support from local governments.
How do you propose to attract or retain artists and cultural workers in your community?
New Westminster has become a leader in the region for our work on Affordable Housing. Ensure we have affordable housing is key to ensuring that artist can find a home in our community.
What do you feel is the single most important issue relating to arts, culture, and heritage in your community, and what action will you take to address it?
In the next few years the City of New Westminster will be taking over ownership of the Massey Theater. This is an exciting opportunity for the city and we need to work with Massey Theater society to help upgrade and ensure the theater continues into the future providing the incredible theater experiences it has been providing for a generation.
How do you personally engage in the cultural life of the community? (e.g. involvement on committees, attending arts and culture events, etc.)
I am very active in my community and attend community events and meetings almost every day of the week.
