Do you know how much your local government invests in the arts? Would you commit to advocating for an increase in that cultural investment for arts, culture, and heritage in your community, within the capacity of your elected body?
Significant investment through the provision of the Port Moody Arts Centre, a civic building, and the Esplanade artists studios. City support for various arts and culture events (art4u, festival of the arts, art association arts sale, etc). I think we need to increase funding for the arts centre to support the increased space with the appleyard house having been added. I would like to see an increase in public art.
If elected, will you take an active role on behalf of your local government in championing the growth of arts, culture and heritage in your community? Why?
Heritage is very important in Port Moody and i would like to see a strong connection between arts events celebrating heritage and history (tying together the two sometimes disconnected aspects). I would ensure we continue to have arts and culture programs that reach out to our younger people.
Students with an education rich in the arts have better grade point averages and are three times more likely to get a degree. Will you commit to making the arts a critical component of every child’s education? If so, how?
We support the school district on programs of choice and the community connections at the schools. Proud that sd43 chose moody middle as ‘ecole school of the arts’ and are reaching out into the community to activate the school as a form of arts centre. I will certainly support all of their efforts, bidirecational, and helping move concepts of increasing arts participation forward (ie: ties to arts centre for programming)
How will your local government maintain or grow its investment in cultural programs in your community?
Encouraging more community investment in arts and culture, for example sponsored public art through memorial naming sponsorships and businesses including art, murals, etc. on their property.
Will you work to ensure access to affordable, sustainable cultural spaces for artists and arts organizations? If so, how?
Ensuring the properties we have now (noted above) are used to maximum efficiency and use, and activating additional space through partnerships with school district and other facilities that have availability and times of not being used.
How do you propose to improve cultural tourism in your community?
We need to ensure the arts centre society is resourced to allow them to host and sponsor events , such as wearable arts, that they have in the past. We need to ensure our museum is telling the great story of Port Moody and is able to meet the expectations of visitors who want to learn more about the city.
How do you propose to attract or retain artists and cultural workers in your community?
Commissioning from the city for public and other art pieces, in house artist and arts programmers at the city or in partnership with the arts centre.
What do you feel is the single most important issue relating to arts, culture, and heritage in your community, and what action will you take to address it?
Engaging the artists in developing concepts and ideas for shows, festivals, expos, etc. going forward. Making sure the arts community is embracing the promotion of the arts and engaging with the public. I believe we need to work with the arts centre and city cultural staff and heritage society to ensure those opportunities are available and realized and the artists are supported.
How do you personally engage in the cultural life of the community? (e.g. involvement on committees, attending arts and culture events, etc.)
I attend as many events of the Port Moody arts centre, arts association, museum, and other cultural events as I am able to , probably 40ish events per year. I promote the events and the artists via social media. When i encounter exceptional artists , or cultural experiences in our or other communities i reach out to bring/attract those to our community.

I believe arts and culture is one of the keys from growing communities from cities - going beyond the bricks and the wood, to invigorate the lives of residents and challenge us to go beyond the surface.
