Running for

City/Town Council

Party or Slate (if applicable)

Do you know how much your local government invests in the arts? Would you commit to advocating for an increase in that cultural investment for arts, culture, and heritage in your community, within the capacity of your elected body?

CNV spends 19% of it’s budget (13.9 million annually) on Recreation, Arts and Culture. Of that amount it is not clear what portion is directly spent on arts, culture and heritage. There are several other line items within the City budget that contribute to arts, culture and heritage including capital expenditures for new venues that will support the arts (Shipyards / Museum).

I will always advocate for the arts as I believe they enrich the cultural fabric of our community.

If elected, will you take an active role on behalf of your local government in championing the growth of arts, culture and heritage in your community? Why?

Yes because I believe they enrich the cultural fabric of our community, contribute to the mental health of its members, and provide an opportunity for expression that cannot be found through other means.

Students with an education rich in the arts have better grade point averages and are three times more likely to get a degree. Will you commit to making the arts a critical component of every child’s education? If so, how?

As a City Council candidate I cannot directly impact school curriculum, however, I can ensure funding support is made available to school groups and other groups who come before council.

Cultural Growth

How will your local government maintain or grow its investment in cultural programs in your community?

By continuing to invest in public spaces like the Shipyards and the Civic Plaza where cultural events can take place at minimal costs, we can foster growth in cultural programs and cultural tourism.

Cultural Spaces

Will you work to ensure access to affordable, sustainable cultural spaces for artists and arts organizations? If so, how?

As a councillor I can advocate for including arts and cultural facilities in the new Harry Jerome center. I would also ask for increased participation by the business community in funding maintenance and operations for existing cultural spaces. Centennial Theatre, for example could seek a corporate sponsor for this purpose

Cultural Tourism

How do you propose to improve cultural tourism in your community?

The City has done a good job of attracting people to our community through events like Fun City, the Shipped Music Festival, Art Walks, the Night Markets and many others. Not all of these events are directly funded by the City, but public spaces to hold these events are constructed by the City with these events in mind. I would continue to seek our opportunities where we can build public spaces that accommodate cultural and heritage activities.

How do you propose to attract or retain artists and cultural workers in your community?

Through the North Vancouver Recreation Commission, the City currently supports an 800k grants program that supports individual and group arts and cultural projects and programs. We could look at expanding this program by partnering with businesses to increase the size of this grants program. Businesses in arts and culture like the film industry offer good paying jobs and I would work to increase their presence on the North Shore.

Key Issues

What do you feel is the single most important issue relating to arts, culture, and heritage in your community, and what action will you take to address it?

I think a lot of people don’t understand the growing fiscal contribution that arts, culture and heritage make to our community. Cultural tourism is leading travel industry growth worldwide as people look for authentic experiences. I would focus on increasing the number of arts, heritage and cultural events that both help us identify as a community and attract others to participate.

How do you personally engage in the cultural life of the community? (e.g. involvement on committees, attending arts and culture events, etc.)

I have participated in the North Shore Art Crawl and enjoy seeing the works of my neighbours and friends through this event. I have also been supportive of the arts through my role on the Advisory Planning Commission, and attendance at the Polygon gallery.

Additional Information

If you'd like to provide voters with additional information about your stance on arts, culture, and heritage issues in your community, please use the space below.

I believe in the value of the arts and believe that arts and culture is part of what makes us special as human beings. I regularly visit galleries in Europe on family trips and want to see greater exposure to these human patrimonies locally.
