Port Moody

Running for

City/Town Council

Party or Slate (if applicable)

Do you know how much your local government invests in the arts? Would you commit to advocating for an increase in that cultural investment for arts, culture, and heritage in your community, within the capacity of your elected body?

In 2018 the city dedicated one million dollars to our arts and culture operating budget. This is approximately 2.8% of our total 35 million dollar operating budget for the city. Although the City of Port Moody spends more on the arts than most other municipalities, I will continue to advocate for additional funding for the arts. Also new developments are requested to contribute .5% of their total construction cost of construction to public art. I would like to see this increased also.

If elected, will you take an active role on behalf of your local government in championing the growth of arts, culture and heritage in your community? Why?

Yes! I have a lifelong history of championing the arts. I am an artist. Also, in my two terms on city council, I have advocated tirelessly for the arts and have chaired the Arts and Culture Committee. I co-founded "The Shuffle, Port Moody Art Walk" , founded "KaBoom! the Port Moody Art Explosion", and hosted "Artists Meeting Artists" events. I hosted a fundraiser for the Port Moody Arts Centre in my home and continue to feature many local professional and emerging artists in my Port Moody art gallery located in a heritage building on Gallery Row on historic Clarke Street. I am always looking for ways to promote artists and raise awareness for the importance of arts, culture and heritage in our community.

Students with an education rich in the arts have better grade point averages and are three times more likely to get a degree. Will you commit to making the arts a critical component of every child’s education? If so, how?

I am extremely proud that Port Moody is home to Ecole Moody Middle School of the Arts. As a city councillor I supported the establishment and continuing journey of the arts in education as a focus.

Cultural Growth

How will your local government maintain or grow its investment in cultural programs in your community?

We will assist and enable cultural organizations to leverage additional funding sources. We will strive for and celebrate ongoing excellence in community cultural development programming. We will acknowledge and nurture contributions by groups and individuals to Port Moody's cultural events and programs while increasing opportunities for public appreciation and access.

Cultural Spaces

Will you work to ensure access to affordable, sustainable cultural spaces for artists and arts organizations? If so, how?

Yes, 100%. Makerspaces are critical to ensuring that artists can continue to survive in the communities in which they live. I will continue to push for city-owned spaces and vacant buildings to be used for artists and art and their organizations. New developments will be encouraged to include studio space. Industrial zones can be enticed with tax incentives to create artist spaces.

Cultural Tourism

How do you propose to improve cultural tourism in your community?

I will continue to advocate for and suggest marketing initiatives, collaborating with the economic development and arts and culture stakeholders, to nurture an arts hub and multiple cultural expressions in the City of the Arts.

How do you propose to attract or retain artists and cultural workers in your community?

I will continue to push to make it affordable for artists and cultural workers to live and create in Port Moody. I will ensure exposure to artists and arts and culture-related industries and businesses in the city. I will work with the Arts and Culture Committee, with Council and with management in employing artists on city staff in MANY departments. This will ensure that we foster the arts, and our vision as City of the Arts, in everything we do.

Key Issues

What do you feel is the single most important issue relating to arts, culture, and heritage in your community, and what action will you take to address it?

What is most important is bringing an audience and customers to patronize the artists, events and businesses.

How do you personally engage in the cultural life of the community? (e.g. involvement on committees, attending arts and culture events, etc.)

I have served as:

Chair, Arts & Culture Committee

Chair, Seniors Focus Committee

Library Board Trustee of five years

Vice-Chair, Community Planning Advisory Committee

Vice-Chair, Heritage Commission

Co-founder, The Shuffle, Port Moody Art Walk 2018

Chair & Founder of KaBoom! The Port Moody Art Explosion!

(and more)

I endeavour to attend arts and cultural events whenever possible. I often host arts and cultural events taking place in the city.

Additional Information

If you'd like to provide voters with additional information about your stance on arts, culture, and heritage issues in your community, please use the space below.

I believe that cities need to encourage and support artists in all platforms for example: visual, performing, digital, culinary and literary. Inclusivity, diversity and the SOGI curriculum are extremely important attributes for personal identity and creativity. We must all foster acceptance and tolerance and a kinder, gentler society. The preservation and enhancement of heritage homes and buildings in our city is extremely fragile. We must do whatever we can to protect them.
