Do you know how much your local government invests in the arts? Would you commit to advocating for an increase in that cultural investment for arts, culture, and heritage in your community, within the capacity of your elected body?
I do not know the exact number but I am committed to more funding, more public art and more support for our local museum society.
If elected, will you take an active role on behalf of your local government in championing the growth of arts, culture and heritage in your community? Why?
Arts, culture & heritage are key to a healthy and vibrant community. I believe that we must embrace our heritage and celebrate our arts. We have a beautiful community with the addition of more public art we can not only celebrate that beauty we can celebrate our place in history pre and post colonization.
Students with an education rich in the arts have better grade point averages and are three times more likely to get a degree. Will you commit to making the arts a critical component of every child’s education? If so, how?
Yes, although the Town of Princeton has no direct input on what the school district does for curriculum I believe that we must work together for the future of our community. I have committed to a youth drop in centre in an old school that the municipality leases from the school district and currently houses our performing arts and local arts council. I would hope that by working with the arts community we can provide through the youth drop in centre new opportunities for our communities arts and exposure to arts through partnered programing.
How will your local government maintain or grow its investment in cultural programs in your community?
I want to include our First Nations and Metis communities when we are speaking about cultural growth. The white washed history of the Interior must end and through partnership and education we can begin a new. I believe strongly that the municipality has a social responsibility to support cultural and heritage programs as well as creating new programs and events for the public.
Will you work to ensure access to affordable, sustainable cultural spaces for artists and arts organizations? If so, how?
Yes, currently our arts community rents gallery space from the municipality through a portion of their sales. I will end this and provide the arts community this space for free. We need to encourage more artists to move here. I will work hand in hand with our local arts council to create public spaces for art displays as well as working space.
How do you propose to improve cultural tourism in your community?
Firstly we need to be inclusive. For far too long we have only recognized part of our story. I will work with local First Nations and Metis groups, work with the local Museum society, other historical societies and the arts community to create the true story of one of the oldest communities in the Province. We will create a strategy based on our history and develop accordingly so we have a marketable experience for tourist. Princeton has a rich past we need to share that with the rest of the world.
How do you propose to attract or retain artists and cultural workers in your community?
What do you feel is the single most important issue relating to arts, culture, and heritage in your community, and what action will you take to address it?
The breakdown in the relationship between both the arts and museum groups and the municipality. We need to mend that relationship by showing that we respect the two communities. We need to show that the current level of funding is secure and to stop playing politics with their organizations and funding. Being a museum member and a strong supporter of the arts community I have already starting reaching out to both.
How do you personally engage in the cultural life of the community? (e.g. involvement on committees, attending arts and culture events, etc.)
Personally I am a member of the museum society and attend most functions hosted at our museum. I attend as many music and performing arts events that I can including our annual traditional music festival. I regularly attend functions at our art gallery.
