Do you know how much your local government invests in the arts? Would you commit to advocating for an increase in that cultural investment for arts, culture, and heritage in your community, within the capacity of your elected body?
Don’t know. Haven’t seen the amount in the financial statements I’ve reviewed. I support the Arts and local artists but wouldn’t necessarily commit to increasing funding. However, I would support greater engagement with the Arts communities and better methods of showcasing artists work.
If elected, will you take an active role on behalf of your local government in championing the growth of arts, culture and heritage in your community? Why?
Yes. Arts and culture are the soul of a community - a critical aspect of a society that is becoming more bureaucratized, fragmented and technology driven.
Students with an education rich in the arts have better grade point averages and are three times more likely to get a degree. Will you commit to making the arts a critical component of every child’s education? If so, how?
Agree but “education” is the domain of the School board & the Ministry of Education. I would like to see student’s art work on display in civic buildings, and school bands performing at civic events. City Parks and Rec could also help promote school fine art productions. I’ve hired local students/artists to play at my campaign function.
How will your local government maintain or grow its investment in cultural programs in your community?
Create partnerships w/ corporate community, artists, council, staff & prospective patrons.
Will you work to ensure access to affordable, sustainable cultural spaces for artists and arts organizations? If so, how?
Space is at a premium but a bit of due diligence reveals unused public spaces like churches/church basements, cafes & school areas are available, the city can help organize, contract & promote.
How do you propose to improve cultural tourism in your community?
Local Tourism is largely driven by wine industry at present. Opportunities for partnerships w/ local wineries and arts community exist. Some wineries have already realized synergies (e.g. Bard in the Vineyard).
What do you feel is the single most important issue relating to arts, culture, and heritage in your community, and what action will you take to address it?
Lack of awareness. Greater promotion.
How do you personally engage in the cultural life of the community? (e.g. involvement on committees, attending arts and culture events, etc.)
Attend local events. Visit galleries. Purchase art work by local artists. Hire aspiring musicians for events...
