Do you know how much your local government invests in the arts? Would you commit to advocating for an increase in that cultural investment for arts, culture, and heritage in your community, within the capacity of your elected body?
As this encompasses many different aspects, an exact dollar amount would be difficult to provide. I do believe that arts, culture and heritage are an important part of our city and should be supported. I feel that many events and programs are often not well attended due to lack of information and advertising. I would commit to making the arts a part of my public awareness proposal for the city. I would offer the use of city owned, and often underused venues, to support our local arts, culture and heritage events. These are low cost solutions to our taxpayers, with the possibility of greater exposure for this important facet of our city.
If elected, will you take an active role on behalf of your local government in championing the growth of arts, culture and heritage in your community? Why?
Yes! I am in agreement that access to, and participation in, the arts is important for personal health and well being and can be great way to create engagement with our citizens.
Students with an education rich in the arts have better grade point averages and are three times more likely to get a degree. Will you commit to making the arts a critical component of every child’s education? If so, how?
I see the positive impact of the arts in education. in many instances these are only "after school" programs and are not well supported financially. I would advocate for a better ratio of students time involved in the arts and seek funding to support these programs, locally, provincially and federally.
How will your local government maintain or grow its investment in cultural programs in your community?
I would create the information sharing proposal I have mentioned, awareness creates knowledge. If more people are "in the know" then more citizens could access programs in place they may not presently be aware of. Making available city owned venues to showcase our arts, culture and heritage would be the starting point I would encourage.
Will you work to ensure access to affordable, sustainable cultural spaces for artists and arts organizations? If so, how?
I would offer city owned venues at affordable rates. I would be proposing youth centers in the community that will have events for local arts and culture. I will be proposing senior villages that will also have like events. I will be proposing an affordable housing strategy so more residents will have more disposable income to attend these events as well.
How do you propose to improve cultural tourism in your community?
The creation of a better information sharing system to gain a wider audience to promote it.
How do you propose to attract or retain artists and cultural workers in your community?
By offering avenues to them in the community to showcase their talents and/or interests. By making local arts and culture a part of more aspects of city planning more awareness will be created. Affordable housing concepts are one of the proposals I would be introducing and wouldl be inviting local artists to beautify these homes.
What do you feel is the single most important issue relating to arts, culture, and heritage in your community, and what action will you take to address it?
Public awareness. With more avenues to share information with the public on a larger scale more people would be reached and a greater number of them may become involved.
How do you personally engage in the cultural life of the community? (e.g. involvement on committees, attending arts and culture events, etc.)
I am a music lover so I attend concerts and festivals in the area. I have missed out on a few that I would have attended simply because I was not aware of them until after the fact. I have friends that are artists in music and painting and support them in their efforts to showcase their talents. Music is the universal language, and I enjoy many genres of music. I hope to create some venues in the city for local artist to be seen and heard.
