Do you know how much your local government invests in the arts? Would you commit to advocating for an increase in that cultural investment for arts, culture, and heritage in your community, within the capacity of your elected body?
Generally, the Village supports with funds and in kind resources for many arts, culture & heritage activities in our community.
If elected, will you take an active role on behalf of your local government in championing the growth of arts, culture and heritage in your community? Why?
I initiated looking at establishing a public art policy that has been part of the Village's strategic priorities as a long term goal. I will continue to support this if re- elected.
Students with an education rich in the arts have better grade point averages and are three times more likely to get a degree. Will you commit to making the arts a critical component of every child’s education? If so, how?
I have asked Council to engage with the local School District in partnerships/ collaborations that will foster increased access to the whole community in a forms of life long learning.
How will your local government maintain or grow its investment in cultural programs in your community?
It is a challenge balancing the needs & wants of our community. There are the things like safe water supply, effective waste water treatment, health & safety services, recreation services that compete with limited resources, and some of these are required by regulation(s).
Will you work to ensure access to affordable, sustainable cultural spaces for artists and arts organizations? If so, how?
Growth of the Village has put a strain on every day operations. More future planning needs to be done, both on what is needed, and how to finance it. I am committed to doing this when re- elected.
How do you propose to improve cultural tourism in your community?
It is an important part of the economic development strategy that has been adopted by Council and is starting to be implemented. Representation from arts, culture & heritage sectors is on our steering committee.
How do you propose to attract or retain artists and cultural workers in your community?
We already have many, the challenge is the enormous issue of housing affordability. I am committed to working to address the full continuum of housing needs.
What do you feel is the single most important issue relating to arts, culture, and heritage in your community, and what action will you take to address it?
I think that can't be defined in a single issue. There are many issues that are part of concretely addressing issues of affordability.
How do you personally engage in the cultural life of the community? (e.g. involvement on committees, attending arts and culture events, etc.)
I attend events as my time allows. I think that it is important for elected officials to show support by being seen at events.
