City of Langley
Party or Slate (if applicable)
Do you know how much your local government invests in the arts? Would you commit to advocating for an increase in that cultural investment for arts, culture, and heritage in your community, within the capacity of your elected body?
Yes I would, it is a big part of our community
If elected, will you take an active role on behalf of your local government in championing the growth of arts, culture and heritage in your community? Why?
Yes - I work for the Downtown Langley Business Association and and we are always partnering with our Mayor and Council and advocating for continued additions and increases to Arts & Culture in our community. I believe that public art enhances a community, and culture and heritage are the backbone of any community, because they embrace differences and recall the history of a community.
Students with an education rich in the arts have better grade point averages and are three times more likely to get a degree. Will you commit to making the arts a critical component of every child’s education? If so, how?
Yes, my children and now my grandchildren all attended fine arts schools and i can see the difference it has made in their education. Council works closely with the school board and trustees and this will be something I will advocate for.
How will your local government maintain or grow its investment in cultural programs in your community?
Langley City has a lot of cultural diversity and as a result we continue to find activities and programs and encourage participation from everyone. It's an ongoing thing and I don;t see that ever stopping.
Will you work to ensure access to affordable, sustainable cultural spaces for artists and arts organizations? If so, how?
Yes - one of my platforms is for the City to start building a Performing Arts space in 2019. Part of that vision includes cultural space for artists and arts organizations.
How do you propose to improve cultural tourism in your community?
We are the organization that oversees our Tourism entity - Discover Langley City - and cultural tourism is a large part of that. We are always trying to think of ways to embrace this.
How do you propose to attract or retain artists and cultural workers in your community?
We have a strong Arts Council in our community and I have worked with them for years to support this and will continue to do so.
What do you feel is the single most important issue relating to arts, culture, and heritage in your community, and what action will you take to address it?
As mentioned, I will continue to lobby for a performing Arts Centre in our community. For me, this is the biggest issue.
How do you personally engage in the cultural life of the community? (e.g. involvement on committees, attending arts and culture events, etc.)
I sit and have sat on a number of committees including the Public Arts Advisory Committee, the Douglas Park Community School Society and the Communities in Bloom Committee, all of which have a large cultural component.
