School District #57: Prince George
Party or Slate (if applicable)
Do you know how much your local government invests in the arts? Would you commit to advocating for an increase in that cultural investment for arts, culture, and heritage in your community, within the capacity of your elected body?
no, I do not know at this time how much is directed towards the art. Yes, I would work to increase the funding.
If elected, will you take an active role on behalf of your local government in championing the growth of arts, culture and heritage in your community? Why?
Yes, because learning is richer when art, culture and heritage are the avenue through which knowledge is passed down.
Students with an education rich in the arts have better grade point averages and are three times more likely to get a degree. Will you commit to making the arts a critical component of every child’s education? If so, how?
Yes, by encouraging teachers to explore ways to include parent involvement and contributions to classroom learning by sharing their cultural knowledge with the students, by encouraging greater collaboration with local arts groups and increasing education-through-art-and-cultural-studies training for teachers.
How will your local government maintain or grow its investment in cultural programs in your community?
By seeing the value of the arts and culture for the health of the community.
Will you work to ensure access to affordable, sustainable cultural spaces for artists and arts organizations? If so, how?
I would seek to increase, if possible, the availability of school facilities to local teachers for after-school arts and culture classed and advocate for more bursaries toward childhood exposure to the arts.
How do you propose to improve cultural tourism in your community?
Promote the telling of the stories (in a way that is accessible to tourists) of the peoples of the area; First Peoples to present residents.
How do you propose to attract or retain artists and cultural workers in your community?
General improvement of the economy, improved internet services, and better transportation options, will provide improved incentives for the skilled artists to stay in Prince George.
What do you feel is the single most important issue relating to arts, culture, and heritage in your community, and what action will you take to address it?
Seeing value in each family's story. I would encourage this by visits to schools on days when family heritage stories are being told.
How do you personally engage in the cultural life of the community? (e.g. involvement on committees, attending arts and culture events, etc.)
I volunteer for a local kids theatre, I have been on the board, participated in, paid for my children to participate in, and volunteer, for our local Speech Arts and Drama Festival, pay for music education for my children, attend our local professional theatre and symphony as I can, purchased art and jewelry from a local artist....

The best learning happens when the students are interested. Arts and Culture are learning avenues that would work for many teachers.
