Do you know how much your local government invests in the arts? Would you commit to advocating for an increase in that cultural investment for arts, culture, and heritage in your community, within the capacity of your elected body?
The City of Salmon Arm provides a reasonable level of support towards the advancement of Art, Culture, and Heritage Preservation. I would like to see more funds set aside specifically to provide enhanced support to First Nations and other visible minorities support in these areas.
If elected, will you take an active role on behalf of your local government in championing the growth of arts, culture and heritage in your community? Why?
Yes, I will take an active role in championing the growth of the arts, culture and heritage preservation in Salmon Arm. I believe that art and culture can express the soul of a community and that heritage preservation can help us to understand how we came to our current situation and teach us to not repeat the mistakes of the past.
Students with an education rich in the arts have better grade point averages and are three times more likely to get a degree. Will you commit to making the arts a critical component of every child’s education? If so, how?
As a City Councillor school issues are outside of my purview, though I believe that art should be an important part of any children's activities organised or sponsored by the city.
How will your local government maintain or grow its investment in cultural programs in your community?
I support the recognition and funding of cultural programs, especially for First Nations and visible minority communities. These programs can help individuals from those specified backgrounds understand their own identities, they help others gain insight into their cultures, and they provide recognition to the contributions of First Nations and visible minorities to the prosperity and success we enjoy today.
Will you work to ensure access to affordable, sustainable cultural spaces for artists and arts organizations? If so, how?
I believe that Salmon Arm has sufficient public space to engage and support the arts in our town, I will work to ensure they continue to be supported at current levels.
How do you propose to improve cultural tourism in your community?
Support for organisations like Haney House that chronicle, preserve, and share the local history of Salmon Arm and the surrounding communities. This will help to ensure that our local stories and cultural heritage are not lost to future generations.
How do you propose to attract or retain artists and cultural workers in your community?
For this I would defer to the opinions of experts in the field, and proceed with measures that can be funded without increasing the tax burden of residents.
What do you feel is the single most important issue relating to arts, culture, and heritage in your community, and what action will you take to address it?
The continuing acknowledgement of First Nations and visible minorities to the tapestry of Salmon Arm's existence. I would work to provide recognition to their contributions.
How do you personally engage in the cultural life of the community? (e.g. involvement on committees, attending arts and culture events, etc.)
I enjoy viewing the work created by those who are far more skilled in artistic endeavours than myself. I believe that allowing a forum where artists and other creative people can develop and display their skills, enhances the experience of every member of the community.
