Do you know how much your local government invests in the arts? Would you commit to advocating for an increase in that cultural investment for arts, culture, and heritage in your community, within the capacity of your elected body?

Yes, I am aware of how much they invest, approx 7 times more than sports. And yes, I would commit in advocating for all the arts in my community.

If elected, will you take an active role on behalf of your local government in championing the growth of arts, culture and heritage in your community? Why?

Yes I will as we are in need of a Performing Arts Centre. We were divided as a community in the past referendum a Performing Arts Cente. The more people I spoke to were in favor of the PAC, but not the million dollar parkade that was attached to the application. If we separate the 2 issues, I believe the PAC will be a success.

Students with an education rich in the arts have better grade point averages and are three times more likely to get a degree. Will you commit to making the arts a critical component of every child’s education? If so, how?

It is difficult for a City Councillor to make any changes in the Provincial Ministry of Education, but locally I can advocate for the use of City owned property and any cultural and arts programs the City staff can provide. ie; spring break and summer holiday programs. In service days can be a great time to engage them.

Cultural Growth

How will your local government maintain or grow its investment in cultural programs in your community?

By building a Performing Arts Centre, will help us grow our investments and cultural programs which are at a standstill currently. Strong cultural programs bring a community together and also benefit all socio-economic and race backgrounds.

Cultural Spaces

Will you work to ensure access to affordable, sustainable cultural spaces for artists and arts organizations? If so, how?

Yes, by building a Performing Arts Centre. I will support a fiscally responsible application.

Cultural Tourism

How do you propose to improve cultural tourism in your community?

Tourism Kamloops, Chamber of Commerce, City programs need to promote cultural tourism together, and the Performing Arts Centre would be the main attraction.

How do you propose to attract or retain artists and cultural workers in your community?

By promoting cultural tourism, you will attract artists to our area to team up with our local artists and for them to thrive and be creative, we need to give them a place to unleash their creativity, whether it is a city grant or city owned property.

Key Issues

What do you feel is the single most important issue relating to arts, culture, and heritage in your community, and what action will you take to address it?

The lack of a Performing Arts Centre. I will support a fiscally responsible plan at Council. I would work with my fellow councillors to come to a unanimous decision at City Council.

How do you personally engage in the cultural life of the community? (e.g. involvement on committees, attending arts and culture events, etc.)

I have been a past member of the City of Kamloops Social Planning Council. I have volunteered at the Kamloops Marathon, the Summer and Winter games and am very community minded and step forward whenever I am needed.
