Do you know how much your local government invests in the arts? Would you commit to advocating for an increase in that cultural investment for arts, culture, and heritage in your community, within the capacity of your elected body?

Yes, as the Chair of the Sooke Program for the Arts Committee I am always advocating for more funding for all programs in our Community.

If elected, will you take an active role on behalf of your local government in championing the growth of arts, culture and heritage in your community? Why?

I always have championed the growth of arts, culture and heritage and will continue to do so as it is my passion.

Students with an education rich in the arts have better grade point averages and are three times more likely to get a degree. Will you commit to making the arts a critical component of every child’s education? If so, how?

I am an active Board Member on the Harmony Project Sooke which is an after school program bringing music (strings and drums) to students 7 years of age and up. These students have performed at the Mayor's New Year's Levee for the past two years as well as performing with the Sooke Philharmonic Orchestra.

I am also an active Board Member of the Amber Academy Youth Fine Arts Society which is a non-profit organization in Sooke dedicated to empowering youth through artistic education, collaboration and expression. We provide after school programs that encourage positive youth development for students in kindergarten through high school by engaging them in pro-social activities focused on the fine arts. Our classes include drama, show choir, fashion design, and visual arts such as painting, sculpting, and more.

High School arts students have also succeeded in many of the Districts art projects and have been graded on their work by their teachers.

Cultural Growth

How will your local government maintain or grow its investment in cultural programs in your community?

It is the goal of Sooke to sustain its unique cultural identity by honouring and supporting history, celebrating diversity and by promoting the arts.

The District needs to implement the "Sooke Region Cultural Plan" and work on the five key strategies

Work with other Municipalities and local organizations to plan and coordinate art initiatives.

Cultural Spaces

Will you work to ensure access to affordable, sustainable cultural spaces for artists and arts organizations? If so, how?

The District of Sooke and the Sooke Arts Council needs to work together and create a plan for future investments.

Cultural Tourism

How do you propose to improve cultural tourism in your community?

By working together with the many cultural organizations in Sooke to promote and educate on the beauty of our town and all that it has to offer.

How do you propose to attract or retain artists and cultural workers in your community?

By establishing an action plan which includes an operating budget.

Key Issues

What do you feel is the single most important issue relating to arts, culture, and heritage in your community, and what action will you take to address it?

There is a requirement for the Arts, Culture and Heritage Groups to have their own space. A place to call home. It is a work in progress!

How do you personally engage in the cultural life of the community? (e.g. involvement on committees, attending arts and culture events, etc.)

I have season tickets for the Sooke Philharmonic Orchestra, I attend all of the Choirs Concerts, I go to the Night Market, Christmas Markets, it is extremely rare that I miss an evert that is taking place in Sooke.
