Do you know how much your local government invests in the arts? Would you commit to advocating for an increase in that cultural investment for arts, culture, and heritage in your community, within the capacity of your elected body?
I am not aware in dollars and cents how much is invested in arts and culture in the community, I do know however that support is there, and I am also aware that the arts do need public support and I am fully behind that. We also need to look at new ways of funding, with local government support.
If elected, will you take an active role on behalf of your local government in championing the growth of arts, culture and heritage in your community? Why?
Often it is the arts that best reflect our community, and to that end government support is necessary. We need to work with the arts groups to ensure they have the means survive. In turn working with the arts groups there can be creative events that help not only the groups involved but the community as a whole
Students with an education rich in the arts have better grade point averages and are three times more likely to get a degree. Will you commit to making the arts a critical component of every child’s education? If so, how?
Stimulation at the community level to encourage artists, and cultural groups to reach out to the youth in the community is important. It is critical that the arts are promoted while not making them elitist is to be encouraged.
My involvement in the past with the local theater group was encouraging, I reached out to the high school and a few students rose to the cause and helped in the design and construction of a set for a local production. One of the students went on become involved with the theater group as a performer, while another followed a career in design for theater and film.
How will your local government maintain or grow its investment in cultural programs in your community?
Local government needs to work with local groups and other funding resources to ensure there is adequate support for the arts in the community. Often small towns are challenged with the financial resources within the community to ensure proper funding to the arts --- often with government support arts groupsl are able to find that out side the community.
Will you work to ensure access to affordable, sustainable cultural spaces for artists and arts organizations? If so, how?
I feel that the arts need community support, and I feel it is important that arts groups also work together to achieve some of these ends, Often relationships between arts groups and local government can be most fruitful. Common needs can often formulate common solutions with reduced cost and more lasting benefits.
How do you propose to improve cultural tourism in your community?
Currently there are several community events which stimulate tourism as well as arts and cultural awareness in the area. There perhaps needs to be more interaction between the groups and events to maximize the impact of and offer a greater tourism impact and attraction.
How do you propose to attract or retain artists and cultural workers in your community?
Tourism is important to the success of local artists, as there is only so much local art that can be absorbed into the community. Local government needs to work with local artists and hospitality providers to encourage a constant stream of tourists year round into the community. Venues where local artists can exhibit is important. It is also important that the community create gallery space where art can be procured for the community as ultimately this will add to the cultural heritage of the community. Currently we do not have such a space other than some outside installations. A gallery that perhaps could function as a community space, with proper lighting, storage and climate control is important, and is something I would want to work towards.
What do you feel is the single most important issue relating to arts, culture, and heritage in your community, and what action will you take to address it?
Funding is important to the arts groups but is also a challenge with a small population base and many hands reaching out for support. I feel it is important to create partnerships where one group can work with another to help support both their needs. Finding new creative partnerships is important, and we need to find economic stability for this groups, by working together.
How do you personally engage in the cultural life of the community? (e.g. involvement on committees, attending arts and culture events, etc.)
From my arrival in the community working on the TV series "The Beachcombers", my involvement with the "Fire Hall Theater" project and later the Heritage play house, Working part time in local galleries , I have had reasonable exposure to the arts and artists in the community. I have also been involved in partnerships where artists have worked to support other needs in the community. These relationships need to be encouraged and stimulated.

Often people become obsessed with bricks and boards and forget that it is the people who make a community what it is -- we need to work together to find solutions to the issues of the community --- with a small population it is often difficult to meet the financial needs of all groups but with stimulation from local government, to encourage groups to work together, often solutions can be found without putting additional strain on the tax payer. I want to work to help find some of these solutions.
