Do you know how much your local government invests in the arts? Would you commit to advocating for an increase in that cultural investment for arts, culture, and heritage in your community, within the capacity of your elected body?
Yes I would. I am a great supporter of the arts in our schools and in society.
If elected, will you take an active role on behalf of your local government in championing the growth of arts, culture and heritage in your community? Why?
Yes, I would champion the growth of arts, culture and heritage in my community. I believe that the arts help to create well-rounded individuals who are active in their community.
Students with an education rich in the arts have better grade point averages and are three times more likely to get a degree. Will you commit to making the arts a critical component of every child’s education? If so, how?
I would commit to making the arts a critical component of our education system. We must work to ensure that arts funding in our schools is a priority --whether it be for band, dance, visual arts etc.-- as the arts help our children develop into engaged citizens.
How will your local government maintain or grow its investment in cultural programs in your community?
The local government can help to grow cultural community programs by continuing to support our festivals, arts and cultural centers and by sponsoring new community initiatives.
Will you work to ensure access to affordable, sustainable cultural spaces for artists and arts organizations? If so, how?
Yes, I would work to ensure access to affordable, sustainable cultural spaces for artists and arts organizations. Sponsoring "artists in residence" at local schools and arts centers via partnerships with local businesses is one method. Ensuring that we apply for government grants and lobby the government for support is another additional way to ensure this is obtained.
How do you propose to improve cultural tourism in your community?
We can improve cultural tourism by continuing to advertise on our airlines as part of their in-flight service. Ensuring that our arts events are part of each local newspaper --human interest stories, events pages etc.--these are some things that need to be done.
How do you propose to attract or retain artists and cultural workers in your community?
By ensuring that they are paid for their contributions.
What do you feel is the single most important issue relating to arts, culture, and heritage in your community, and what action will you take to address it?
Ensuring that all our students can afford to be engaged in the arts is the most important issue in our community. In order to ensure that all students can do this we must advocate to the government, and the school board, that the arts must be sufficiently funded..
How do you personally engage in the cultural life of the community? (e.g. involvement on committees, attending arts and culture events, etc.)
I attend many of our festivals and am an avid supporter of local theatre. I also teach literature and as part of my courses we examine theater, dance and arts and engage with the arts community as a class.
