Do you know how much your local government invests in the arts? Would you commit to advocating for an increase in that cultural investment for arts, culture, and heritage in your community, within the capacity of your elected body?
Yes I am aware of our spending and think we could work with local groups to expand the reach of the spending and increase portions of the budget.
If elected, will you take an active role on behalf of your local government in championing the growth of arts, culture and heritage in your community? Why?
Yes, I believe strongly in the investment of culture and heritage as it is the investment in these that leads to an increased expression and diversity of the arts.
Students with an education rich in the arts have better grade point averages and are three times more likely to get a degree. Will you commit to making the arts a critical component of every child’s education? If so, how?
Yes. Our family sponsors and works with groups that foster creativity and expression paired with Technology, such as the Fraser Valley Maker Space. We also see that children exposed to music and drama have a great deal more confidence in critical thinking so look for opportunities to expand any and all programs that foster a diverse education in children (and youth) that includes the Arts.
How will your local government maintain or grow its investment in cultural programs in your community?
By pairing local groups who have a knowledge of Arts, Culture and Heritage with our local facilities to make programs and classes more accessible and affordable.
Will you work to ensure access to affordable, sustainable cultural spaces for artists and arts organizations? If so, how?
Yes through the re-purposing of spaces, and incentives for groups, through possible credits, grants and deferrals in order to over come some of the start up barriers encountered by startups and non profits.
How do you propose to improve cultural tourism in your community?
Through invitation and inclusion in festivals and dedicated cultural events. We could have more diversity in food truck festivals, crafts, cross cultural displays associated with certain holidays etc.
How do you propose to attract or retain artists and cultural workers in your community?
By helping foster an economy and environment that in turn fosters opportunities for artists and culturally based
What do you feel is the single most important issue relating to arts, culture, and heritage in your community, and what action will you take to address it?
I think that there needs to be greater protection of historic architecture and preservation of local culture. There also needs to be an inclusion for under represented cultural groups and new additions to the community.
How do you personally engage in the cultural life of the community? (e.g. involvement on committees, attending arts and culture events, etc.)
My family are in a variety of music lessons and frequent performances through my children's music school.
We teach science through interactive art classes. These are a joint endeavor through the Fraser Valley Maker Space, conducted at a variety of Fraser Valley Library locations.
