Funding

Do you know how much your local government invests in the arts? Would you commit to advocating for an increase in that cultural investment for arts, culture, and heritage in your community, within the capacity of your elected body?

As school board trustee, my role is to work with educators in the district. I would advocate for the importance of arts and music education, and for increased multicultural and indigenous heritage and arts education.

Advocacy

If elected, will you take an active role on behalf of your local government in championing the growth of arts, culture and heritage in your community? Why?

Yes, I would be keen to take part on committee and consultation regarding increasing arts and culture and heritage learning in the school district. Arts are important to community sharing, community communication, and inclusion. Also, many children learn through arts and develop confidence through participation in arts.

Education

Students with an education rich in the arts have better grade point averages and are three times more likely to get a degree. Will you commit to making the arts a critical component of every child’s education? If so, how?

Yes, I would be keen to take part on committee and consultation regarding increasing arts and culture and heritage learning in the school district. Arts are important to community sharing, community communication, and inclusion. Also, many children learn through arts and develop confidence through participation in arts.

Cultural Growth

How will your local government maintain or grow its investment in cultural programs in your community?

This isn't quite the role of school board, as I understand it, though I would advocate for better arts and music education funding in schools.

Participation

How do you personally engage in the cultural life of the community? (e.g. involvement on committees, attending arts and culture events, etc.)

I attend music events, music festivals, and cultural events. I go to the art galleries regularly, and I encourage my students to take part in arts and music. I also give my college students options to complete a creative arts and cultural project instead of a traditional essay. I love this - students often work even harder for a creative project than on an essay and they are proud of their work.
