Funding

Do you know how much your local government invests in the arts? Would you commit to advocating for an increase in that cultural investment for arts, culture, and heritage in your community, within the capacity of your elected body?

I do not know the total amount in The comox Valley and I would definitely be advocating for more support through services or gifts in kind.

Advocacy

If elected, will you take an active role on behalf of your local government in championing the growth of arts, culture and heritage in your community? Why?

Yes. I am an actor and musician in local theatre and the president of a local Musical Theate production company. I will be active :)

Education

Students with an education rich in the arts have better grade point averages and are three times more likely to get a degree. Will you commit to making the arts a critical component of every child’s education? If so, how?

Yes. I have been committed to this for a long time. We need to look for alternative methods to training our children and youth in the Arts. All sizes don't fit every child growing up so as important as Science, English and Physical Education is, no educational experience is complete without an element of cultural and Arts training

Cultural Growth

How will your local government maintain or grow its investment in cultural programs in your community?

A council that is focused on ensuring it is part of the culture of the community. Leading with Love my friend calls it. I like that

Cultural Spaces

Will you work to ensure access to affordable, sustainable cultural spaces for artists and arts organizations? If so, how?

Definitely I have been an advocate for this in the past and will continue to be a champion for performance spaces and venues for all artists

Cultural Tourism

How do you propose to improve cultural tourism in your community?

working through the Comox Valley Economic Development society to ensure there is a focus on growing Cultural tourism

How do you propose to attract or retain artists and cultural workers in your community?

What a great question. I guess simply having venues for the artists to share and express their art. As a musician it is difficult to make a living in The Comox Valley but some are succeeding. Educating the community on Culture and the Arts as a career is important and allowing bylaws to match the focus to ensure Artists have a clear path to expression.

Key Issues

What do you feel is the single most important issue relating to arts, culture, and heritage in your community, and what action will you take to address it?

A venue for small performances. We have a wonderful theater in The Sid Williams Theatre but so much more could happen if we had a purpose built facility for Artists, Musicians and Actors to show their stuff. A space close to dowton amenities that people could easily attend. Family friendly environment with a welcoming feel for all people

Participation

How do you personally engage in the cultural life of the community? (e.g. involvement on committees, attending arts and culture events, etc.)

As mentioned above, I am an actor, producer, musician, President of a Theater company. I live in these footsteps

Additional Information

If you'd like to provide voters with additional information about your stance on arts, culture, and heritage issues in your community, please use the space below.

History informs the future. Arts, culture and heritage informs our citizens of the past and the future. No community is truly connected without this fabric woven into it's fibre. I have been an advocate for Arts, cuture and Heritage for many years. It began at an early age when I noticed peers in high school that didn't quite fit into the "Norm," but they did fit into other avenues of expression. They found a home on the stage, behind an easel, learning a new language, shaping a sculpture. The importance of diversity of prgrams allows all of us to be able to express ourselves in the way we are most comfortable. The arts allows expression and innovation. It creates new pathways of interpretation, of learning and expressions of thought.
