Township of Langley
Party or Slate (if applicable)
Do you know how much your local government invests in the arts? Would you commit to advocating for an increase in that cultural investment for arts, culture, and heritage in your community, within the capacity of your elected body?
No, I am not 100% sure, however, depending on how the formula is calculated for Arts spending, I would think...Display room...a Museum where artwork is preserved and presented, Activity rooms for performing, small theatres, grants for the Arts, Other financial supports departmentally (planning, development, colleges and universities).
The Township of Langley will be building an New Museum, with an emphasis on Culture and the Arts. This will be a huge investment. A new by-law will also be introduced where the Developing Community will be asked to provide a CAC (Council Amenity Contribution) for just that purpose...Arts, Culture, Scalptures... that will be reviewed to meet a specific policy. This is certainly a giant step in a contribution to our Arts and Cultural community. The Township of Langley is also working with Aboriginal groups in particular the Kwantlen nation and their Display Centre and Heritage Restaurant. Their is also a plan to work with other partners to build a Large Performing Art's and Cultural Centre.
If elected, will you take an active role on behalf of your local government in championing the growth of arts, culture and heritage in your community? Why?
Yes, as a musician, I have grown to appreciate those who can perform, write, paint, scalp, and other talents. Our society is alway better with these elements thriving in a Community.
Students with an education rich in the arts have better grade point averages and are three times more likely to get a degree. Will you commit to making the arts a critical component of every child’s education? If so, how?
AS a teacher, I totally agree that rich Arts education plays a major role in a students life. It also serves as a means for a student to escape from the challenges of a heavy academic workload. Since, I am running as a Councillor, I can only support our School District's direction in providing Quality Arts education.
How will your local government maintain or grow its investment in cultural programs in your community?
AS stated in your Funding question, Planning for a New Arts and Cultural Musem, Support Kwantlan nation, CAC (Council Amenity Contributions), Grants, and a Partnership for a new Performing Arts Centre.
Will you work to ensure access to affordable, sustainable cultural spaces for artists and arts organizations? If so, how?
Absolutely...if space cannot be provided FREE of charge for not-for-profit groups, certainly subsidized costs...and opportunities wherever possible to support Artists and Arts groups...not to forget to mention Service clubs and sponsorships!!!
How do you propose to improve cultural tourism in your community?
WE have a Tourism committee dedicated to providing Tourism of all shapes and sizes, Including Cultural tourism. We have The National Historic Site of Fort Langley, a Vibrant Aboriginal Community, Regional Parks, A community music school, and many things in the Township of Langley that fit the Cultural Tourism bill.
How do you propose to attract or retain artists and cultural workers in your community?
Keep them active, make them feel valued, promote their talents, reward them for their achievements, attend their performances, displays, and events, hire them at openings or events, provide the spaces and facilities needed and most of all encourage them!
What do you feel is the single most important issue relating to arts, culture, and heritage in your community, and what action will you take to address it?
Getting our new Museum built, providing display space for artists, and partnering for a new Large Performing Arts Centre
How do you personally engage in the cultural life of the community? (e.g. involvement on committees, attending arts and culture events, etc.)
I have been a co-chair of a Parks, Recreation, and Culture committee. We have a Cultural policy developed for the Township of Langley. I attend events, hired musicians and writers, performed at Seniors functions, and continually encourage our valuable Arts/Cultural community.

I am an advocate for the Arts. I play the guitar, write music and poetry. I attend theatre performances, Music events and Display presentations, and I thoroughly enjoy the local and regional talent in the Region. I believe that having VIBRANT ARTS CULTURE, AND HERITAGE: is paramount in a growing community (like Langley Township) where people live, work, and play!!!
