Do you know how much your local government invests in the arts? Would you commit to advocating for an increase in that cultural investment for arts, culture, and heritage in your community, within the capacity of your elected body?
I have a rough idea of the current level of support, and yes I would advocate for increased funding.
If elected, will you take an active role on behalf of your local government in championing the growth of arts, culture and heritage in your community? Why?
Absolutely. Arts, culture and heritage are huge peices of our economy, build community and give us a sense of place. It is our obligation to support the arts and culture community.
Students with an education rich in the arts have better grade point averages and are three times more likely to get a degree. Will you commit to making the arts a critical component of every child’s education? If so, how?
I am leaving my role as trustee for SD 71 where I have advocated for a 'whole child' education including art, music, drama as part of every childs education. In order for our kids to grow into effective, healthy, happy adults, their education must allow for focus on any and all potential skills and talents. Arts education is a vital part of a well rounded education (at all levels).
How will your local government maintain or grow its investment in cultural programs in your community?
Building annual funding into our budget, continue to support a heritage committee, support arts events via the community grant program.
Will you work to ensure access to affordable, sustainable cultural spaces for artists and arts organizations? If so, how?
Yes, by sharing our limited cultural and recreational spaces, and looking for collaboration opportunities between the municipality and arts organizations for new and existing partnerships for space.
How do you propose to improve cultural tourism in your community?
Support our museum, building it into our economic development plan, supporting the heritage commission.
How do you propose to attract or retain artists and cultural workers in your community?
By maintaining affordable rental stock, and all of the above.
What do you feel is the single most important issue relating to arts, culture, and heritage in your community, and what action will you take to address it?
Housing is becoming unaffordable here, and our cultural and recreation facilities are full. We can continue to suport the entrepreneurial spirit here, and work on developing affordable housing solutions, and moving our facilities plan forward to increase available public space.
How do you personally engage in the cultural life of the community? (e.g. involvement on committees, attending arts and culture events, etc.)
Attending events: Museum, Markets, Live Music, and Artisan fairs, supporting arts social enterprises, supporting arts via my trustee position with SD71.
