Funding

Do you know how much your local government invests in the arts? Would you commit to advocating for an increase in that cultural investment for arts, culture, and heritage in your community, within the capacity of your elected body?

The Parks, Recreation and culture department totalled over 55 million dollars in expenses last year, with over 200 000$ in commitments committed from proposed tax increases this year. I believe this is money well spent and would certainly advocate for increased funds in this area.

Advocacy

If elected, will you take an active role on behalf of your local government in championing the growth of arts, culture and heritage in your community? Why?

Yes. I was a graduate of the french immersion program and know first hand what an intricate exploration of culture can do for a young person. We need to expand and celebrate the many cultures that call Coquitlam home, this will develop a more profound sense of community among both tenured and new residents.

Education

Students with an education rich in the arts have better grade point averages and are three times more likely to get a degree. Will you commit to making the arts a critical component of every child’s education? If so, how?

Certainly, students that have the freedom to explore the educational variances that the arts offer can develop a more intricate goal with respect to what they seek to study further. I would advocate for provincial ministries to increase the amount of grants, bursaries and financial assistance available to prospective students seeking further study in the arts.

Cultural Growth

How will your local government maintain or grow its investment in cultural programs in your community?

Engaging local cultural groups is essential. Coquitlam has an abundance of suitable recreational facilities where future festivals/celebrations can be held and the involvement of these local associations is key to involving as much of the community as possible. The federal ministry of Canadian Heritage can and should provide funding to expand Coquitlams cultural celebrations.

Cultural Spaces

Will you work to ensure access to affordable, sustainable cultural spaces for artists and arts organizations? If so, how?

Financial constraints should not be a road block for Artists and in this consideration. The evergreen cultural centre, place des arts and other locations can showcase these artists at a more consistent rate. We need to improve marketing for showcasing these artist and the organisations they form, so that revenue from tickets, sales etc can provide suitable revenue and ensuring its self sustainability

Cultural Tourism

How do you propose to improve cultural tourism in your community?

How do you propose to attract or retain artists and cultural workers in your community?

Increased national exposure could potentially lead to events and showcases with a global influence. This would be an attractive topic for a 2018/1019 Arts advisory board.

Key Issues

What do you feel is the single most important issue relating to arts, culture, and heritage in your community, and what action will you take to address it?

The eroding influence of our Francophone culture. It was a profound part of my educational experience and I feel like its existence is being continually ignored. Beyond the festival du bois and some street signs of french heritage, most people would be oblivious to the impact its had on our history. I believe an initial educational marketing campaign would be prudent, as well as exploring how to attract and retain french immersion teachers so that students can have the benefit of fluency in our two national languages, something that will benefit them later in life.

Participation

How do you personally engage in the cultural life of the community? (e.g. involvement on committees, attending arts and culture events, etc.)

I attend the festival du bois every year which is always an amazing experience. My full time job unfortunately does not allow me to participate on any committees, something that i would be able to chance with an appointment to council.
