Party or Slate (if applicable)
Do you know how much your local government invests in the arts? Would you commit to advocating for an increase in that cultural investment for arts, culture, and heritage in your community, within the capacity of your elected body?
Yes, I do know and I will advocate for arts, culture and heritage to the best of my ability within the capacity of Nanaimo's budget.
If elected, will you take an active role on behalf of your local government in championing the growth of arts, culture and heritage in your community? Why?
I've always been supportive of arts, culture and heritage in my community. It defines a community which knows the value of culture and heritage and how they are preserved and honoured through the arts.
Students with an education rich in the arts have better grade point averages and are three times more likely to get a degree. Will you commit to making the arts a critical component of every child’s education? If so, how?
As a potential councillor, I would support the local School Board's commitment to art in children's classrooms. It sparks creativity and makes a child's education more well rounded.
How will your local government maintain or grow its investment in cultural programs in your community?
I would support an update of the Nanaimo Community Plan for Public Art as it seems we have fallen behind other municipalities. We have a rich and varied cultural program in the City with I plan to see continue and grow.
Will you work to ensure access to affordable, sustainable cultural spaces for artists and arts organizations? If so, how?
I definitely will work to ensure and increase access by ensuring that City of Nanaimo projects incorporate cultural spaces within our buildings, parks, recreation facilities and other areas. In addition we need to work with developers who are either constructing or renovating buildings to ensure that they do the same.
How do you propose to improve cultural tourism in your community?
To become a city rich with art galleries, musicians, theatres and other cultural events makes for an interesting community to tourists and that brings in money and jobs into the community. We have very beautiful scenery in Nanaimo which encourages tourists to visit; our artistic and cultural events would encourage them to stay awhile longer.
How do you propose to attract or retain artists and cultural workers in your community?
If there are more artistic and cultural opportunities for workers within the city then that will attract them to move to Nanaimo.
What do you feel is the single most important issue relating to arts, culture, and heritage in your community, and what action will you take to address it?
The most important issue is safeguarding and increasing the current budget for arts, culture and heritage. I will work in Council and Committee to do this.
How do you personally engage in the cultural life of the community? (e.g. involvement on committees, attending arts and culture events, etc.)
Attending local arts and cultural events are important and I attend as many and as often as I can.
