Do you know how much your local government invests in the arts? Would you commit to advocating for an increase in that cultural investment for arts, culture, and heritage in your community, within the capacity of your elected body?

We have a grant program that community groups can apply for. We also provide in kind services to groups for facilities and public works time.

If elected, will you take an active role on behalf of your local government in championing the growth of arts, culture and heritage in your community? Why?

I am running for re-election and have always supported the arts, culture and heritage in Cumberland. I have sat on many of these groups boards and volunteered at many functions. These events are a very important economic driver year round.

Students with an education rich in the arts have better grade point averages and are three times more likely to get a degree. Will you commit to making the arts a critical component of every child’s education? If so, how?

We have many talented residents within the village. Recently I have spoken to individuals to teach children to be able to perform on stage. They are in the process of bringing this together. Our Community School has programs that provide many programs for children.

Cultural Growth

How will your local government maintain or grow its investment in cultural programs in your community?

We are always open to hear from groups and organizations who wish to produce events. One of our events celebrated 130 years of continued celebrations this could not happen without the support of Council.

Cultural Spaces

Will you work to ensure access to affordable, sustainable cultural spaces for artists and arts organizations? If so, how?

We have businesses in our community that supply venues for art work free. As a small community we have limited space and rely on our business community to step in and they are great at doing that. Our Recreation department has offered art classes.

Cultural Tourism

How do you propose to improve cultural tourism in your community?

The Village has hired a economic development coordinator and he is working with a steering committee to bring all of our assets to the for front. It was highlighted by the public and very important to the community.

How do you propose to attract or retain artists and cultural workers in your community?

We are at the beginning stage of our program and it will take time to get there.

Key Issues

What do you feel is the single most important issue relating to arts, culture, and heritage in your community, and what action will you take to address it?

We have a heritage commission that provides information to Council. We have a museum and board of directors, We have a culture society. These are all made up of volunteers. This is new to have all these people working with the village, in the past the lack of residents many items fell off the council table. We could not do it all.

How do you personally engage in the cultural life of the community? (e.g. involvement on committees, attending arts and culture events, etc.)

I have sat on many groups over the years. I try to attend all events in the village. Quite often donating time and goods working for their success.

Additional Information

If you'd like to provide voters with additional information about your stance on arts, culture, and heritage issues in your community, please use the space below.

I will continue working with all groups and enjoy attending! We need to protect our heritage in buildings they are our core to the downtown. We are well know for the buildings in the Village.
