Do you know how much your local government invests in the arts? Would you commit to advocating for an increase in that cultural investment for arts, culture, and heritage in your community, within the capacity of your elected body?

Our community supports arts, culture and heritage but not to the level that I would like to see. If re-elected I have already stated that I would be seeking to get an performing arts and culture centre as part of our downtown vision. This requires partnerships that I have already begun to cultivate.

If elected, will you take an active role on behalf of your local government in championing the growth of arts, culture and heritage in your community? Why?

Yes, I am strongly supportive and would take a hands on roll to ensure things get done.

Students with an education rich in the arts have better grade point averages and are three times more likely to get a degree. Will you commit to making the arts a critical component of every child’s education? If so, how?

Yes, by working in colaboration with our School District which to date have done a very good job of making the arts an important aspect of our school system. More work and support can always be done.

Cultural Growth

How will your local government maintain or grow its investment in cultural programs in your community?

Our recreation staff have done an incrediable job of programing opportunities for our residents, however with the growing population and diversity of our community I believe that there are many more opportunities to explore.

Cultural Spaces

Will you work to ensure access to affordable, sustainable cultural spaces for artists and arts organizations? If so, how?

Again our community has provided many public spaces and opportunity for these activities and I would continue to support and encurage us to build upon the successes that we have achieved.

Cultural Tourism

How do you propose to improve cultural tourism in your community?

Our new Tourism board is very interested in developing a stronger sense of the arts in our community and have initiated a mural walk in our community that has been very successful as an example. As the council representative on this board I support and would continue to support any future intiatives brought forward.

How do you propose to attract or retain artists and cultural workers in your community?

If my vision of a performing arts and cultural centre comes to be, our already rich arts community would become stronger and more focused in terms of having a recognized hub for all activities.

Key Issues

What do you feel is the single most important issue relating to arts, culture, and heritage in your community, and what action will you take to address it?

I believe as in most communities that it is the lack of funding. Unfortunately it seems to me that when budget time comes around this area of investment always seems to get cutback. This trend needs to be reversed, however without the appropriate support of a majority of council this trend will continue.

How do you personally engage in the cultural life of the community? (e.g. involvement on committees, attending arts and culture events, etc.)

As a current councillor, I attend most if not all events in our community, my children all aprticipated in the arts during their school years and I have attempted to have a committee formed in order to get a stronger voice for council consideration. I have been unsuccessful to date in having council form such a committee.
