Do you know how much your local government invests in the arts? Would you commit to advocating for an increase in that cultural investment for arts, culture, and heritage in your community, within the capacity of your elected body?
I do not know the exact budget, as it has changed recently due to our split with Maple Ridge, but I do know that many of the citizens feel as though we are getting less than what we did in the past when we were joint -- I would love to see more go towards park, rec, arts culture and hope we can work it in the budget.
If elected, will you take an active role on behalf of your local government in championing the growth of arts, culture and heritage in your community? Why?
Yes I would, as a photographer and creative person, I believe that arts and culture, and our heritage is extremely important. It enhances the beauty of our city and creates a positive energy to our neighbourhoods. Maintaining our heritage brings us back to our roots, and helps us appreciate the city we have.
Students with an education rich in the arts have better grade point averages and are three times more likely to get a degree. Will you commit to making the arts a critical component of every child’s education? If so, how?
I will commit to helping teachers grow their art programs, I will need the help of teachers for ideas on what they need and how they see the future.
How will your local government maintain or grow its investment in cultural programs in your community?
Right now, the budget for 2018 shows an increase of funding for civic engagement and public participation in the growth of our community, through this initiative we will see what kind of programs our community needs and wants, and implement where possible.
Will you work to ensure access to affordable, sustainable cultural spaces for artists and arts organizations? If so, how?
I would love to bring back our Artist in Residence program that we had a couple years back -- and offering our community centres at discounted rates for artists and art organizations to provide their knowledge and creativity to the community.
How do you propose to improve cultural tourism in your community?
We have so many beautiful areas of Pitt Meadows, it would be wonderful to create areas that are Tourist destinations, and offer information about these areas to visitors, through signage, gatherings and other events. Get the community involved in contests, painting the city, murals on schools buildings etc and keeping the contracts to the talent in our City.
How do you propose to attract or retain artists and cultural workers in your community?
Low cost rentals for events, city support on cultural events, help with advertising, and losing some of the red tape that makes events difficult to put on.
What do you feel is the single most important issue relating to arts, culture, and heritage in your community, and what action will you take to address it?
Community involvement, many residents do not know what is happening in their community, we need more ways to get out information and make people aware of the services we do have. Social media, mail outs, and smaller community meetings would be ideal. I would love to have the schools more involved, they are our future!
How do you personally engage in the cultural life of the community? (e.g. involvement on committees, attending arts and culture events, etc.)
I try to go to events, and I volunteer my time when and where I can. Being a photographer I often volunteer to capture events in and around the community.
