Do you know how much your local government invests in the arts? Would you commit to advocating for an increase in that cultural investment for arts, culture, and heritage in your community, within the capacity of your elected body?

There needs to be more dollars allocated for public art and I will be working with my council colleagues and Mayor to ensure there is sufficient funding to support the arts, culture and heritage community. I will be looking and reviewing areas in Vancouver that is low in arts and culture and advocate for investment into that particular area to ensure it is represented for the community to enjoy.

If elected, will you take an active role on behalf of your local government in championing the growth of arts, culture and heritage in your community? Why?

If elected, I hope to be a champion not just in Vancouver civic areas for arts, culture and heritage but I will use my experience as a Park Board Commissioner to work with Park Board to support them through funding to support arts, culture and heritage as I see arts and culture needs to be extended across the city of Vancouver in all jurisdiction.

Students with an education rich in the arts have better grade point averages and are three times more likely to get a degree. Will you commit to making the arts a critical component of every child’s education? If so, how?

As a new Mom to a 4 month old baby, I see how colors and textures stimulates my baby and I will be an advocate supporting parents and school programs to encourage a component of the extracurricular or school activities/curriculum and events to include arts, culture and heritage. Arts is an important mechanism to growth and development and I believe this should be made available to every child. I will also personally volunteer at the community as a parent to assist and to ensure that every child has access. I have seen the benefits arts and culture has on children while working as an Education Assistant specializing in Autism Spectrum Disorder and I am committed to supporting the education and growth through arts, culture and heritage.

Cultural Growth

How will your local government maintain or grow its investment in cultural programs in your community?

I will work with other levels of government, agencies, non profits and companies to collaborate to grow the arts, culture and heritage in the community through our city owned properties and assets such as libraries, parks, and centers. I will also reach out to the community to discuss ways to grow the programs and expand it into our communities and at the end of the day, it is our everyday residents that sees and uses the facilities and it’s important we build and invest based on the communities needs and requests.

Cultural Spaces

Will you work to ensure access to affordable, sustainable cultural spaces for artists and arts organizations? If so, how?

I will work to ensure everyone has access to affordable, sustainable cultural spaces for artists and arts organizations by ensuring a portion of the city budget is allocated to our arts and culture partners that includes accessibility and sustaining it with necessary grants/funds. I will also connect the community with other organizations to ensure we all collaborate and work together to deliver access to the arts community that is affordable and sustainable.

Cultural Tourism

How do you propose to improve cultural tourism in your community?

I propose we support cultural tourism through working with our community center associations, tourism communities and other levels of government through public art in our public spaces such as parks, libraries etc We have over 240 parks and we can encourage people to visit our parks to see the implementation of public art pieces and at the same time to see our green spaces. I will also encourage art that is touring around the world to showcase their work in Vancouver and be featured in our City of Vancouver.

How do you propose to attract or retain artists and cultural workers in your community?

I will look at reviewing city owned spaces and finding locations that will best support artists and find funds through other levels of Government, local businesses and organizations to support the arts community.

Key Issues

What do you feel is the single most important issue relating to arts, culture, and heritage in your community, and what action will you take to address it?

Finding affordable art spaces for the artists. Together with Mayor and my council colleagues will review the city budget and find funds and locations that can be used or retrofit for artists uses. I know how difficult it is to find affordable housing but it is equally difficult to find affordable spaces to support our arts community and I will do my best to build complete communities by ensuring arts, culture and heritage is a key component to a community through development and planning process of any new developments.

How do you personally engage in the cultural life of the community? (e.g. involvement on committees, attending arts and culture events, etc.)

I attend community events and talking to organizers/leaders and guests to gather ideas to further develop policies based on what the community is advocating. I am a Park Board Commissioner and laision to 5 community centers and 3 city advisory groups where I can connect with the community to discuss the needs and follow up with solutions. Lastly, as a new Mom and small business owner I have the opportunity to connect with families and clients to discuss ways to integrate arts and culture and I will continue to do that.
