Do you know how much your local government invests in the arts? Would you commit to advocating for an increase in that cultural investment for arts, culture, and heritage in your community, within the capacity of your elected body?
If elected, will you take an active role on behalf of your local government in championing the growth of arts, culture and heritage in your community? Why?
I believe that the arts and culture in our communities have significant roles to play in a healthy future of our area and our identity. I would like to champion causes that help us communicate and come together better as friends and neighbours. The arts, culture and heritage celebrations help that happen.
Students with an education rich in the arts have better grade point averages and are three times more likely to get a degree. Will you commit to making the arts a critical component of every child’s education? If so, how?
I commit to bringing forward ideas to those who have direct impacts on our children’s futures and urging more engagement in this area.
How will your local government maintain or grow its investment in cultural programs in your community?
I believe that contributions to cultural growth are the responsibility of all of us. Monetary amounts do not always improve culture, but can assist in getting people together.
Will you work to ensure access to affordable, sustainable cultural spaces for artists and arts organizations? If so, how?
The areas for artists and arts organizations need refreshing and in some cases re-builds. There needs to be some funding opportunities sourced to assist organizations in obtaining funding, together with funds raised by the groups, to improve structures and venues in the area.
How do you propose to improve cultural tourism in your community?
Helping to ensure that groups are publishing their events with all area tourism and business interests, and finding ways to access new avenues to get the word out.
How do you propose to attract or retain artists and cultural workers in your community?
By encouraging visitors to seek out area artists and cultural specialists.
What do you feel is the single most important issue relating to arts, culture, and heritage in your community, and what action will you take to address it?
I think there is still some division between various cultural groups. Encouraging communications protocol agreements, acknowledging and protecting heritage where possible need to be front and centre.
How do you personally engage in the cultural life of the community? (e.g. involvement on committees, attending arts and culture events, etc.)
I am relatively new to this area, but was on the Museum board in Chase and volunteered regularly at Music on the Lake events. I celebrated many cultural events with the Neskonlith, Adams Lake and Little Shuswap Lake Indian Bands.
If you'd like to provide voters with additional information about your stance on arts, culture, and heritage issues in your community, please use the space below.
I believe I have expressed my views well here. We do not have a community if we don’t have arts, culture and heritage so their importance is not lost on me.
