Funding

Do you know how much your local government invests in the arts? Would you commit to advocating for an increase in that cultural investment for arts, culture, and heritage in your community, within the capacity of your elected body?

I know that the amount is not large enough. I would love to see added funding for the arts, culture and heritage. We look at increasing our viability as a vibrant city of choice, inclusive, fostering reconciliation with our indigenous peoples and also tourism industry growth. I believe that increasing funding in arts serves to also support these endeavors. Also, governmental funding over many years has declined to horrific and startling levels, overall. We need to add funding to arts, culture and heritage as this is also a measure of a progressive society and one that values healthy living, happiness, learning and the growth of the individual. Key findings from the 2014 Nanaimo Cultural Plan. "A need to integrate the Nanaimo Cultural Plan into City of Nanaimo Strategic and Financial Plans"

Advocacy

If elected, will you take an active role on behalf of your local government in championing the growth of arts, culture and heritage in your community? Why?

I would love to see added funding for the arts, culture and heritage. We look at increasing our viability as a vibrant city of choice, inclusive, fostering reconciliation with our indigenous peoples and also tourism industry growth. I believe that increasing funding in arts serves to support these endeavors. For tourism and reconciliation, I believe that these will be a vehicle for change. Also, local governmental funding over many years has declined to horrific and startling levels, overall. I would advocate that for the above reasons, we need to add local funding to arts, culture and heritage. Also, for Nanaimo to be viewed as a progressive city to businesses, individuals, rich in local history, a university city and one that values healthy living, happiness, learning and the growth of the individual. As an elected representative, I also need to respect a number of themes that came out of the 2014 public consultation process entitled ``A Cultural Plan for a Creative Nanaimo, 2014-2020`` to advocate for commhjnity minded changes such as:

  • for Cultural opportunities and spaces throughout Nanaimo - not just downtown

  • An interest in outdoor performance spaces for events and festivals

  • Preservation of heritage features of our downtown

  • Further developments to The Diana Krall Plaza

  • An awareness to develop pride of place and market our cultural assets

  • Highlight Snunéymuxw First Nation history, heritage and culture

  • Support and expand festivals in the city

Education

Students with an education rich in the arts have better grade point averages and are three times more likely to get a degree. Will you commit to making the arts a critical component of every child’s education? If so, how?

Yes, for sure. As a school Trustee, I have pushed for additions to these components of education. I will continue to push for added funding until the end of my term as well as advocate for such progressive changes with the province, who sets educational funding and also focuses far too heavily on other academics in their curriculum. Also, any bylaw changes or funding proposals for this age group would be considered and very likely supported by myself, for your exact reasons, which is based on research. I have a psychology degree and this is an area of research in human outcome studies - favoring arts and cultural exposure.

Cultural Growth

How will your local government maintain or grow its investment in cultural programs in your community?

I will propose added dollars for our local budget funding for the arts, culture and heritage. We need to increase our stature as a vibrant city of choice, inclusive of others, fostering reconciliation with our indigenous peoples and also tourism industry growth. I believe that increasing funding in arts serves to also support on these local endeavors. Also, governmental funding over many years has declined to horrific and startling levels, overall. We need to add funding to arts, culture and heritage as this is also a measure of a progressive society and one that values healthy living, happiness, learning and the growth of the individual.

Cultural Spaces

Will you work to ensure access to affordable, sustainable cultural spaces for artists and arts organizations? If so, how?

Bylaw changes, gifts in kind to the arts for city space, rentals if and when needed, as well as advocacy for these recurring trends from our 2014 public consultation process. I would therefore support:

  • outdoor performance spaces for events and festivals

  • Cultural opportunities and spaces throughout Nanaimo

  • Preservation of heritage features of our downtown

  • Further developments to The Diana Krall Plaza

  • An awareness to develop pride of place and market our cultural assets

  • Highlight Snunéymuxw First Nation history, heritage and culture

  • Support and expand festivals in the city

Cultural Tourism

How do you propose to improve cultural tourism in your community?

Connecting with local indigenous peoples, increasing the Culture & Heritage Operating Grant, supporting indiginous peoples cultural events, mining and mining heritage displays, week or weekend new cutural event exploration and expansion and staying open to exploring ideas within trends discovered from our 2014 Arts Community input

How do you propose to attract or retain artists and cultural workers in your community?

bylaw changes, lowing rates for space, sustaining and improving on existing infastructure

Key Issues

What do you feel is the single most important issue relating to arts, culture, and heritage in your community, and what action will you take to address it?

Increasing our overall budget and implementing innovations around our local Nanaimo heritage and developing supportive relationships to enhance our indigineous culture and traditions being expressed locally

Participation

How do you personally engage in the cultural life of the community? (e.g. involvement on committees, attending arts and culture events, etc.)

I have belonged to Nanaimo Theatre Group and society, before become a school trustee for sd 68, as an assistant stage manager, actor and would love to join again after political life. I am a drummer, a guitarist (more natural at the drums I am told) and also the culinary arts is an ongoing part of my artistic expression. I also have taken dance lessons over the years, love all forms of dance, practice salsa dancing on occasion and one day plan to learn ballroom dance.

Additional Information

If you'd like to provide voters with additional information about your stance on arts, culture, and heritage issues in your community, please use the space below.

Full support. I support adding additional funds to enhance local arts overall. For far too long the arts have endured cuts over decades at various government levels. I am very interested in all new arts and heritage proposals as well as extending grants, awards, bursaries, etc. I believe the arts enrich our individual lives as well as the Nanaimo region. I am especially open to the exploration of emerging concepts, as well as supporting our trends from our 2014 public consultation process.
