Central Kootenay Regional District

Running for

Regional Director

Party or Slate (if applicable)

Do you know how much your local government invests in the arts? Would you commit to advocating for an increase in that cultural investment for arts, culture, and heritage in your community, within the capacity of your elected body?

Each jurisdiction in the regional district invests in art in their own community or Area. I provide grant funding to the museum, theater, and events such as Mural Fest as well as our rich inventory of aging heritage building. The amount of funding varies from year to year however I have pledged a general support grant to two organizations.

If elected, will you take an active role on behalf of your local government in championing the growth of arts, culture and heritage in your community? Why?

Yes, I was in the theater community in my youth and was a crafts person as a young adult. Dance occupied much of my adult creative expression and I have designed art and cultural mentor-ship programs for youth. I also hold house concerts occasionally and invite community members. Singing in a choir is my current passion as often as I can attend. I am wholeheartedly supportive of the arts withing the capacity I have to spread small amounts of funding across many needs.

Students with an education rich in the arts have better grade point averages and are three times more likely to get a degree. Will you commit to making the arts a critical component of every child’s education? If so, how?

I will support school initiatives that focus on art such as school performances or projects that integrate art and nature.

Cultural Growth

How will your local government maintain or grow its investment in cultural programs in your community?

I believe it is my job to support things the community is already doing. We support art through an after school program at the elementary school. Our recreation commission would like to further explore music and performances.

Cultural Spaces

Will you work to ensure access to affordable, sustainable cultural spaces for artists and arts organizations? If so, how?

Supporting community halls in our rural area as well as assisting with energy retrofits is designed to keep historic gathering and performance spaces in good physical condition.

Cultural Tourism

How do you propose to improve cultural tourism in your community?

Many artists participate in a culture tour sponsored by Columbia Basin Trust. That process is independent of our local government however I am interested in further supporting an emerging art gallery in a reclaimed early 1900's one room schoolhouse for the purpose of bringing tourists to the quaint location.

How do you propose to attract or retain artists and cultural workers in your community?

Our community is and has been rich with creativity. We have a granting program where the community chooses grants to support. These grants almost always have an art or heritage component. In this way the community meets its own goals.

Key Issues

What do you feel is the single most important issue relating to arts, culture, and heritage in your community, and what action will you take to address it?

In the greater regional community I think opportunities for artists to make a living from their art is a struggle due to a small population and many excellent events. I think collaboration and timing and marketing purposefully such as Art Walk but even more robust will be an outcome of growth in the sector.

How do you personally engage in the cultural life of the community? (e.g. involvement on committees, attending arts and culture events, etc.)

Our family attends many performances . Music, theater, and sometimes art. I am not on an arts committee however I support various initiatives with grant funding such as a website upgrade for the Nelson and District Arts Council. Suggesting other funding sources is also something I can do. We purchase local art for gifts to send across Canada as away of supporting and sharing the talent in our area. It's a way to give something truly unique.

Additional Information

If you'd like to provide voters with additional information about your stance on arts, culture, and heritage issues in your community, please use the space below.

I am in awe of people's creativity and the level of sophistication that exists in the region. There are volunteer efforts all over the region focused on keeping art venues and art shows alive. I appreciate the contribution of all of these groups and our region is distinguished by their efforts. I am glad to contribute in a small way to support the artists in my electoral area when requested.
