Do you know how much your local government invests in the arts? Would you commit to advocating for an increase in that cultural investment for arts, culture, and heritage in your community, within the capacity of your elected body?
As a councillor seeking my fifth term, I have always advocated for strong City investment in arts, culture and heritage. Our museum is funded solely by the City, and we continue to solicit and encourage financial support from the surrounding Cariboo Regional District. That being said, the CRD is working with us, as together, we are actively moving towards a performing arts theatre / community centre.
If elected, will you take an active role on behalf of your local government in championing the growth of arts, culture and heritage in your community? Why?
Yes, as noted above.
Students with an education rich in the arts have better grade point averages and are three times more likely to get a degree. Will you commit to making the arts a critical component of every child’s education? If so, how?
Although I wholeheartedly support and encourage educational enrichment for our young people, I am happy to see that this survey is also directed to school board candidates.
How will your local government maintain or grow its investment in cultural programs in your community?
With participation of the Cariboo Regional District, we are fortunate to have a very successful arts and recreation program, and together, we are proposing a new performing arts theatre / community centre. The City is continuing to invest in our museum and places of heritage significance in the community. We are also interested in furthering development of our First Nations cultural and heritage.
Will you work to ensure access to affordable, sustainable cultural spaces for artists and arts organizations? If so, how?
Our Art Galley and arts spaces are a function of the City and Regional District and so we are very cognizant of the need to continue to grow affordable sustainable arts spaces and develop new spaces for our cultural needs.
How do you propose to improve cultural tourism in your community?
As noted above, we are very serious about developing a performing arts / cultural theate / community centre and furthering development of our First Nations cultural and heritage.
How do you propose to attract or retain artists and cultural workers in your community?
This is an integral part of our branding, as arts and culture are high on our list of amenities and values that attract visitors, new residents and business enterprise to our community.
What do you feel is the single most important issue relating to arts, culture, and heritage in your community, and what action will you take to address it?
Improving the climate for creativity, talent and preservation of our past... with a focus in funding facilities, programs and fostering volunteerism.
How do you personally engage in the cultural life of the community? (e.g. involvement on committees, attending arts and culture events, etc.)
For almost 50 years I have and continue to be actively involved in arts, culture and heritage committees, events fund raisers.
