Do you know how much your local government invests in the arts? Would you commit to advocating for an increase in that cultural investment for arts, culture, and heritage in your community, within the capacity of your elected body?
As Greens, we believe that Arts and Culture are important components to a healthy and vibrant society. This appreciation must start in schools so as School Trustees we support arts and culture exposure from a young age.
If elected, will you take an active role on behalf of your local government in championing the growth of arts, culture and heritage in your community? Why?
Yes I have and will continue to do. I sat on the Arts and Culture Policy Committee (ASPC) this past year.
How will your local government maintain or grow its investment in cultural programs in your community?
As a School Board we can support our teachers and the new curriculum in utilizing the arts as a form of educational expression. Also supporting artists and art educators to interact with schools and professional development programming as well as through PAC's.
Will you work to ensure access to affordable, sustainable cultural spaces for artists and arts organizations? If so, how?
Yes in fact I put forward a motion which was passed, to have the VSB work closely with the Park Board and City to better utilize VSB facilities through agreements to lease or donate space for things like art classes, dance, poetry readings, nature walks, food/cooking classes, etc.
How do you propose to improve cultural tourism in your community?
By supporting art exhibitions, classroom exposure of arts and culture, highlighting our multicultural and indigenous traditions, festivals, etc.
How do you propose to attract or retain artists and cultural workers in your community?
By offering space, teaching opportunities, exhibitions, professional development, etc.
What do you feel is the single most important issue relating to arts, culture, and heritage in your community, and what action will you take to address it?
Offering affordable opportunities to partake in arts and cultural events. Ideas would be to have VSB work with the Park Board to create interesting festivals and exhibitions to bring families out to witness and participate in these events and encourage the submission of work by our students. Working with the city re grants, space, etc. Offering public spaces ie VSB, to artists.
How do you personally engage in the cultural life of the community? (e.g. involvement on committees, attending arts and culture events, etc.)
I attend art shows, festivals, etc. and have a child who is quite artistic and a working actor (he is in grade 10). He benefitted from an arts education at Nootka Elementary; his grandmother is a working artist (painter) and his dad is a musician. I sat on the Arts and Culture Policy Committee for the last year.
If you'd like to provide voters with additional information about your stance on arts, culture, and heritage issues in your community, please use the space below.
I think it is important for voters to know that as Green School Board candidates we fully support arts, music and culture as part of the school curriculum and encourage the city to promote it as well through activities such as festivals, expositions, art in public places, etc. It is vital that our public assets demonstrate a commitment to arts and culture as a reflection of the diversity in our cultural community including a focus on Reconciliation and indigenous art and history.
