Do you know how much your local government invests in the arts? Would you commit to advocating for an increase in that cultural investment for arts, culture, and heritage in your community, within the capacity of your elected body?

Yes, I know how much (and on what) our local government invests in the arts, and would advocate for an increase in this investment.

If elected, will you take an active role on behalf of your local government in championing the growth of arts, culture and heritage in your community? Why?

Yes, I will take an active role in championing the growth of arts, culture, and heritage in the community. Arts, culture, and heritage are a huge part of communities, accessible to all, a source of pride for many residents, and help to define a community.

Students with an education rich in the arts have better grade point averages and are three times more likely to get a degree. Will you commit to making the arts a critical component of every child’s education? If so, how?

Yes, by helping to support organisations in the community that bring the arts to children and youths.

Cultural Growth

How will your local government maintain or grow its investment in cultural programs in your community?

By continuing to offer grants-in-aid to arts organisations and sponsoring local art.

Cultural Spaces

Will you work to ensure access to affordable, sustainable cultural spaces for artists and arts organizations? If so, how?

Yes, by supporting local organisations via grants-in-aid to assist them.

Cultural Tourism

How do you propose to improve cultural tourism in your community?

By promoting the large amount of public art and the heritage in Ashcroft.

How do you propose to attract or retain artists and cultural workers in your community?

By ensuring they know the level of support available to them and by promoting their work.

Key Issues

What do you feel is the single most important issue relating to arts, culture, and heritage in your community, and what action will you take to address it?

Making people outside Ashcroft aware of what we have here in terms of art, culture, and heritage, which is extensive. The Village can help by promoting what we have here.

How do you personally engage in the cultural life of the community? (e.g. involvement on committees, attending arts and culture events, etc.)

I've been on the board of the Winding Rivers Arts & Performance Society for six years (president for five of those years). WRAPS does a Music in the Park concert series every summer, hosts a Plein Air Paint-out weekend, holds a Canada Day event with entertainment, and holds a week-long Kids' Fine and Dramatic Arts camp every August. I've acted in six theatrical productions, have directed one, and am currently directing my second. I've been a member of the Sage Sound Singers Choir, and regularly emcee their concerts, as well as other arts events. Every spring I research, write, and present a two-hour-long heritage presentation, focusing on some aspect of Ashcroft's past, and have written a bi-weekly history piece for the local newspaper since 2012.
