Do you know how much your local government invests in the arts? Would you commit to advocating for an increase in that cultural investment for arts, culture, and heritage in your community, within the capacity of your elected body?
Oak Bay, through the CRD, supports the CRD Arts Committee and the Royal Theatre , through a regional funding formula and by assigning Council representatives to sit on each of the committees. As a former Councillor in Oak Bay, I represented Oak Bay on both committees and now, as a volunteer member, I sit on the Oak Bay Heritage Commission and was Chair, 2016-2018. Oak Bay Council also supports its local Arts Alive program which has been well received by the community. Yes, I will continue to advocate for strong cultural investment in arts, culture and heritage in Oak Bay.
If elected, will you take an active role on behalf of your local government in championing the growth of arts, culture and heritage in your community? Why?
Yes indeed. My current and previous affiliations with arts' communities, locally and regionally, have only strengthened my commitment to ensuring that Oak Bay continues to actively plan for and support arts, culture and heritage.
Students with an education rich in the arts have better grade point averages and are three times more likely to get a degree. Will you commit to making the arts a critical component of every child’s education? If so, how?
Yes and will do so by supporting and participating in local arts' educational programming and services, through Council's liaison with Oak Bay schools and promoting and attending arts' activities locally that encourage and support young people.
How will your local government maintain or grow its investment in cultural programs in your community?
Initially, through its local Arts Alive program that receives yearly funding from the municipality. Oak Bay will also continue to represent our community at the CRD on the Arts Committee and on the Royal/McPherson Theatre Society (RMTS).
Will you work to ensure access to affordable, sustainable cultural spaces for artists and arts organizations? If so, how?
Yes, definitely. Oak Bay already hosts/funds a series of public events that sustain artists and arts organizations. A major annual event is the Bowker Brush-Up. These events and other activities showcase the immense talent in this community. Oak Bay is also the host community for the Canadian College of Performing Arts, a very important arts organization here.
How do you propose to improve cultural tourism in your community?
Oak Bay Heritage and Oak Bay Tourism sponsor many significant events, in partnership with local businesses and service organizations, to promote Oak Bay as a wonderful destination in which to live or work or visit.
How do you propose to attract or retain artists and cultural workers in your community?
This is perhaps a more challenging issue that is a work in progress in my view. We have galleries and arts businesses on Oak Bay Ave. that do a lot to promote artists and culture in Oak Bay. As mentioned earlier, Oak Bay continues to help fund major arts initiatives and supports a variety of public events to attract people. One step is to work with the local Business Improvement Association, reaching out to encourage artists and cultural workers to consider Oak Bay as a community in which to locate. More word needs to be done through partnership in my view.
What do you feel is the single most important issue relating to arts, culture, and heritage in your community, and what action will you take to address it?
In a climate of intense development pressure, heritage conservation and retention of heritage homes, landscapes, green spaces and streetscapes are perhaps our greatest challenge.
How do you personally engage in the cultural life of the community? (e.g. involvement on committees, attending arts and culture events, etc.)
Heritage Commission member, attending local cultural events and encouraging the municipality to continue to actively fund and support our local arts community.
