Do you know how much your local government invests in the arts? Would you commit to advocating for an increase in that cultural investment for arts, culture, and heritage in your community, within the capacity of your elected body?
I am not aware of what my local government invests and very interested in learning how much. I would commit to advocating for the art, culture and heritage in Port Coquitlam.
If elected, will you take an active role on behalf of your local government in championing the growth of arts, culture and heritage in your community? Why?
Students with an education rich in the arts have better grade point averages and are three times more likely to get a degree. Will you commit to making the arts a critical component of every child’s education? If so, how?
Yes, I would commit and I support the school board’s programs that take place in summer that would encourage the arts that may not be accessible at home. This past summer, Kwayhquitlum middle school did a guitar class for middle school and would like to see more of these kinds of programs that go beyond academic options.
How will your local government maintain or grow its investment in cultural programs in your community?
Will you work to ensure access to affordable, sustainable cultural spaces for artists and arts organizations? If so, how?
I would start by attend the Arts community meetings. Listen, learning and asking a lot of questions.
How do you propose to improve cultural tourism in your community?
I would propose to improve cultural tourism by supporting public art. Walking through the city of Montreal inspired me with the mix of modern public art and preservation of heritage buildings. Sitting on a lovely deck while watching the streets light up with art at night is spectacular.
How do you propose to attract or retain artists and cultural workers in your community?
I am not sure. I would want to listen to the problems that they have to be sustainable before I can answer that.
What do you feel is the single most important issue relating to arts, culture, and heritage in your community, and what action will you take to address it?
Lack of support for the arts in post secondary. Finding ways for our youth to access grants, scholarships and opportunities is something I am excited to pursue and learn about.
How do you personally engage in the cultural life of the community? (e.g. involvement on committees, attending arts and culture events, etc.)
I am a big supporter and mother of a student of “Rock the Fox” at Terry Fox Secondary. My children have attended guitar lessons at Long and McQuade, and will explore other music programs. We have attended dance programs at the community centre and I have attended at Communty Arts meeting.
