Do you know how much your local government invests in the arts? Would you commit to advocating for an increase in that cultural investment for arts, culture, and heritage in your community, within the capacity of your elected body?
The provincial government has stated they invest $60M into the arts & culture sector each year. Progress is being made in educating the public on the importance of arts & culture to society, education and daily living/health. There are various organizations that are aiding in this as well, including regional and local societies / organizations that provide funding for special events related arts, culture, heritage and community bonding. I would love to see this progress even more.
If elected, will you take an active role on behalf of your local government in championing the growth of arts, culture and heritage in your community? Why?
Yes, I believe that arts, culture and heritage form an important part of who we are and I also believe that education about others culture and heritage can help fight against discrimination and racism. The more we see, the more we understand and accept. Arts are also one of the many ways we have to communicate universally.
Students with an education rich in the arts have better grade point averages and are three times more likely to get a degree. Will you commit to making the arts a critical component of every child’s education? If so, how?
I will work towards this in any capacity I can. Arts provided me with a way to express myself growing up and continues to have a big impact on my life. It is an amazing stress relief and communication tactic for youth and adults and is extremely important for development.
How will your local government maintain or grow its investment in cultural programs in your community?
Osoyoos continues to improve and provide more opportunities for arts and cultural programs. It is vital o our community of diverse backgrounds. I will do what I can to aid in societies and other organizations growth as well as ensure the town stays proactive in these endeavors.
Will you work to ensure access to affordable, sustainable cultural spaces for artists and arts organizations? If so, how?
As with above, this continues to be something Osoyoos (town, businesses and residents) are working on and ensuring these spaces are available and supported
How do you propose to improve cultural tourism in your community?
Working with the current organizations and those wanting to provide cultural programs is key to success.
How do you propose to attract or retain artists and cultural workers in your community?
Osoyoos has a diverse background with all different cultural workers and artists and attracts people from all over. I will work with the current organizations to ensure this continues and aid in development programs.
What do you feel is the single most important issue relating to arts, culture, and heritage in your community, and what action will you take to address it?
Awareness - there are so many things happening in this small beautiful community but awareness is not always there which means poor turnout for events which promote more awareness. Ensuring the community is aware of the events and the organizations in place as well as important heritage considerations are known will help promote and create even more awareness.
How do you personally engage in the cultural life of the community? (e.g. involvement on committees, attending arts and culture events, etc.)
I used to be a lot more involved, particularly in music events and committees. In the past few years time has been very limited but is now opening up again to allow me to become more involved.
