Funding

Do you know how much your local government invests in the arts? Would you commit to advocating for an increase in that cultural investment for arts, culture, and heritage in your community, within the capacity of your elected body?

Recreation and culture make up 21% of the overall budget or $21.5 million dollars all revenue spent by he council needs to reviewed and successful programs expanded and failing programs restructured or eliminated allowing room for new ideas and relevant programs that people will participate in

Advocacy

If elected, will you take an active role on behalf of your local government in championing the growth of arts, culture and heritage in your community? Why?

Growing participation in arts and community programs is one of the privileges of being on Chilliwack city council . Programs that bring people together to celebrate living , working and playing in Chilliwack are what make this city a great place to call home.We have a great history of pioneers , artists, military and farmer groups who have been the foundation of building the community of Chilliwack. Committees are what make things happen and participating in them is how you keep people engaged and projects relevant to the community . I look forward to being on some great active committees.

Education

Students with an education rich in the arts have better grade point averages and are three times more likely to get a degree. Will you commit to making the arts a critical component of every child’s education? If so, how?

School programs are in the jurisdiction of the School board, but the city can be an active supporter by ensuring low cost access to the facilities run by the city

Cultural Growth

How will your local government maintain or grow its investment in cultural programs in your community?

Reviewing where moneys are currently being spent and growing the budget as the tax base increases are the tools the city council has. listening to the feed back from the committees is best way to allocate the moneys.

Cultural Spaces

Will you work to ensure access to affordable, sustainable cultural spaces for artists and arts organizations? If so, how?

Chilliwack owns a lot of park and cultural spaces and ensuring that they are well maintained and budgets are appropriate and not being misused or redirected will allow for more investment. The community needs to be confident that their money is being well spent and they are getting value for their money .

Cultural Tourism

How do you propose to improve cultural tourism in your community?

The best way to improve cultural tourism is to have city council engaged in the committees that are organizing the events. when the city understands the needs and challenges they can best find solutions, everybody likes to know how their tax dollars are being invested in community and cultural events.

How do you propose to attract or retain artists and cultural workers in your community?

Engaging the community with the artists so that all the planed events are well publicized and attended keep the events relevant to the artists and the audience . The artists need the audience and the audience wants to benefit from what the artists have to offer

Key Issues

What do you feel is the single most important issue relating to arts, culture, and heritage in your community, and what action will you take to address it?

I think the Heritage park site is under utilized and has become disconnected from the original purpose of it construction. The city needs to lead the discussion of how the park is going to be utilized and implement a long term plan connected to the needs of the user groups.

Participation

How do you personally engage in the cultural life of the community? (e.g. involvement on committees, attending arts and culture events, etc.)

i attend the Chilliwack Fair , go to concerts at the cultural center and prospera rink, checked out the car show downtown and been to part in the park. i have enjoyed the fireworks since they expanded them to a real good show.

Additional Information

If you'd like to provide voters with additional information about your stance on arts, culture, and heritage issues in your community, please use the space below.

If you want a diverse entertaining cultural experience you need to be part of the organizing process. It is people that volunteer and pour their energy into public events that allow them to happen. There is money being spent but we need the people who are participating to be engaged to make sure the money is well spent and events are great experiences for everyone.
