Do you know how much your local government invests in the arts? Would you commit to advocating for an increase in that cultural investment for arts, culture, and heritage in your community, within the capacity of your elected body?

The municipality has, in the past provided grant-in-aid for the museum. Art and Cultural groups have the opportunity to be a member of the 'Spirit of Clinton' Committee which is a committee of council. By attending a monthly meeting members can use village facilities for reduced rent and have free advertising on an information sign in front of the Municipal Hall.

If elected, will you take an active role on behalf of your local government in championing the growth of arts, culture and heritage in your community? Why?

Yes, I will. I feel the arts, culture and heritage are important for any community. I have personally organized a Craft and Artisan Show every year for the past ten years (this one included). Heritage is important to show where we have been. I've always said that it is easier to plan where you are going if you know where you have been. It is important to know why things were done a certain way in the past. We can learn much from our history!

Students with an education rich in the arts have better grade point averages and are three times more likely to get a degree. Will you commit to making the arts a critical component of every child’s education? If so, how?

I will encourage a school curriculum that includes the arts.

Cultural Growth

How will your local government maintain or grow its investment in cultural programs in your community?

The Village staff currently assists art, cultural and heritage groups to write grants for funding that they might not otherwise get. I would push for this to continue as the small tax base in a community of 650 individuals does not lend itself to funding these without grant funding.

Cultural Spaces

Will you work to ensure access to affordable, sustainable cultural spaces for artists and arts organizations? If so, how?

The artists and art organizations currently have very affordable space in the Seniors Centre here. I would advocate for that to continue.

Cultural Tourism

How do you propose to improve cultural tourism in your community?

I would love to see our First Nations neighbours showcase their heritage, art and cultural traditions along with the many artists who are drawn to this area.

How do you propose to attract or retain artists and cultural workers in your community?

The art community is strong in this area. Many retirees move here away from the large centres in order to enjoy the outdoors. These include painters, sculptures, textile artists and more. Key Issues

What do you feel is the single most important issue relating to arts, culture, and heritage in your community, and what action will you take to address it?

I believe the most important issue is promoting the area and the events to others outside of the community to ensure that art shows, etc. are better attended.

How do you personally engage in the cultural life of the community? (e.g. involvement on committees, attending arts and culture events, etc.)

As I stated earlier, I organize a Craft and Artisan Show every year (October 27th this year) and I also attend the art shows that are put on in our community hall as well as the 'music in the park' events.
