Do you know how much your local government invests in the arts? Would you commit to advocating for an increase in that cultural investment for arts, culture, and heritage in your community, within the capacity of your elected body?
Yes I do. I think our operating grants for our various incredible arts organizations and initiatives are well established. I would advocate for new capital expenditure in the form of a new performing arts centre for Kamloops.
If elected, will you take an active role on behalf of your local government in championing the growth of arts, culture and heritage in your community? Why?
Yes. Again, I feel just maintaining what we have in Kamloops would be enough. But, yes, growth in arts, culture, heritage can be a very good thing. Further development of our talents. Why should we take active roles? One big reason from your candidate toolkit: "8 out of 10 Canadians believe that culture makes communities vibrant places to live and more attractive to visitors"
Students with an education rich in the arts have better grade point averages and are three times more likely to get a degree. Will you commit to making the arts a critical component of every child’s education? If so, how?
This is more a project for the board of education.
How will your local government maintain or grow its investment in cultural programs in your community?
Primarily, by looking into building a new performing arts centre.
Will you work to ensure access to affordable, sustainable cultural spaces for artists and arts organizations? If so, how?
Yes. I think our support for the Kamloops Arts Council, for example, should be maintained.
How do you propose to improve cultural tourism in your community?
I will promote it and help Tourism Kamloops staff promote it.
How do you propose to attract or retain artists and cultural workers in your community?
By maintaining our community spirit, our friendly feel, our great range of outdoor and cultural experiences and by encouraging even more vibrancy in our core areas of the community.
What do you feel is the single most important issue relating to arts, culture, and heritage in your community, and what action will you take to address it?
Performing arts centre. I think we need to work with the arts community to help create a well supported proposal to take to referendum.
How do you personally engage in the cultural life of the community? (e.g. involvement on committees, attending arts and culture events, etc.)
I've served on city hall's arts commission and am avid attender at arts events. I sometimes find myself defending public art choices. I also really enjoy our soon to be iconic back alley murals downtown.
