Funding

Do you know how much your local government invests in the arts? Would you commit to advocating for an increase in that cultural investment for arts, culture, and heritage in your community, within the capacity of your elected body?

We have a vibrant arts and culture component to our Parks Rec & Culture program.

We’ve recently updated our Culture strategy and are finalizing the estimates for a significant expansion of culture services space. Once this work is complete, we will determine how to beat proceed

Advocacy

If elected, will you take an active role on behalf of your local government in championing the growth of arts, culture and heritage in your community? Why?

We have a long history in our city and several groups engaged in its preservation. I have supported the work of these groups and will continue to advocate for an inclusive space to share our history, arts and culture

Education

Students with an education rich in the arts have better grade point averages and are three times more likely to get a degree. Will you commit to making the arts a critical component of every child’s education? If so, how?

This is outside the scope of city government, and I will leave this work to those responsible

Cultural Growth

How will your local government maintain or grow its investment in cultural programs in your community?

As noted above, the execution of our new strategy will see significant funds for cultural programs.

I will advocate for improved funding formulas for events such as Featival du Bois as it is a significant economic development event in our City

Cultural Spaces

Will you work to ensure access to affordable, sustainable cultural spaces for artists and arts organizations? If so, how?

As noted above, expanded spaces and continued funding for programs will be undertaken

Cultural Tourism

How do you propose to improve cultural tourism in your community?

We have created a tourism manager position who is actively engaged in increasing tourism across the full range of city initiatives

How do you propose to attract or retain artists and cultural workers in your community?

We are seeing a number of live work space and studios in development, I would expect that these will be attractive to artists. Future opportunities will exist as our city continues to be revitalized

Key Issues

What do you feel is the single most important issue relating to arts, culture, and heritage in your community, and what action will you take to address it?

Consistent funding streams. I have brought forth the suggestion of 3 year budgetary commitments to groups to provide certainty and will continue to work to achieve this goal.

I am open to discussions and suggestions if best practises to help support our arts and culture groups

Participation

How do you personally engage in the cultural life of the community? (e.g. involvement on committees, attending arts and culture events, etc.)

I attend art openings, music and entertainment events as well as plays in the community. I reach out directly to leaders in the community to discuss ongoing needs
